Keeping Sydney Clean And Green Through Effective Waste Management And Industrial Cleaning

Keeping Sydney Clean and Green Through Effective Waste Management and Industrial Cleaning

by

Alistair White

Like all big cities, Sydney has its fair share of environmental problems. In particular dealing with waste management, industrial cleaning and e waste are all presenting the city with enormous challenges. Sydney’s rapidly spreading conurbation is likely to result in a megacity sometime this century with all the attendant environmental problems that involves. Here’s how the city’s environment firms and agencies are handling these problems of waste and pollution in Sydney.

Waste management in Australia is at the heart of environmental protection and is one particular area where Sydney is highly proactive. The use of the word management rather than disposal identifies that it’s no longer just a matter of throwing away waste. Modern waste is too complex for such a simple solution. Waste management comprises a system of activities that includes waste collection, recycling and disposal, hazardous waste management, emergency response, laboratory services, asbestos removal and re-insulation. In a nutshell, waste management can be defined as a system to safely remove waste products to recycle as much as possible and cause as little impact on the environment as possible. One major trend is the involvement of specialized firms in the provision of complete solutions for industrial waste. These firms are at the vanguard of environmental protection by offering a complete waste management solution for industrial clients. Industrial cleaning is another area in which specialized firms are working for the benefit of the environment. One thing these companies are doing is providing on-site personnel who are experts in such key areas as high pressure water jetting, vacuum loading, tank cleaning, drain and sewer cleaning, sludge management, catalyst handling, and asbestos removal. In short, environmental services Sydney handle every aspect of industrial plant and industrial equipment cleaning. As each site has specific industrial cleaning challenges, these firms tailor-make every solution including which solvents or specialised industrial cleaning equipment are used. By taking advantage of one source facilities management, clients can get all their industrial cleaning done by one expert company leading to gains in synergy and coordination. The result is industrial sites running at optimum capacity with limited downtime as well as environmental friendliness. Finally there’s the pressing matter of e waste

(electronic waste). A major new challenge in recent years has been dealing with the safe and effective disposal of electronic devices such as computers, printers and televisions.

This kind of waste is growing at three times the rate of other waste and has two important characteristics. Firstly, it contains valuable resources that are wasted when they end up in landfill. For example, e waste can contain significant levels of precious metals such as gold and platinum which can be extracted and recycled. Secondly e waste harbours materials that require special handling including toxic heavy metals such as mercury along other poisonous items like cyanide-containing veneers and asbestos. Disposing of these in traditional landfills can result in serious dangers to both the environment and local residents. Other types of e waste which can be effectively recycled are used printer cartridges. Instead of clogging up landfills with plastic, cartridges can be refurbished, refilled and sold. Mobile phones too can be efficiently refurbished instead of just being dumped. At the time of writing, Australia has yet to enact laws on the disposal of e waste meaning it’s up to private firms and local governments to take responsibility for this matter. Fortunately for waste recycling Sydney, the response has been very strong. Both public and private agencies have been very active in dealing with e waste recently. For example, the City of Sydney launched its E-waste recycling collections for residents in November 2008. This has resulted in 43.57 tonnes of electronic waste being recycled. Meanwhile the leading environmental solutions firm Veolia Environmental Services in partnership with Sims E-Recycling launched Australia’s first national e-waste recycling program in 2005. During the period 2007-2008, Veolia was involved in the recovery of close to 7 million kilograms of e-waste in Australia. Effective environmental management

requires concerted action on the parts of both national and local governments as well as the private sector. Sydney is fortunate to benefit from both in its efforts to surmount the challenges of becoming a clean and green metropolis for the benefit of its residents.

Bill Williams writes articles for Veolia Environmental Services, a waste management Sydney company specialising in

industrial cleaning Sydney

wide. Veolia also provides

e waste

collection and recycling service, showing their commitment to the community and the environment.

Romanian student wins NASA Space Settlement Design Contest

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

Horia Teodorescu, a student in 10th grade at Costache Negruzzi College in Ia?i, northeastern Romania, won the annual worldwide NASA Space Settlement Design Contest. The contest is sponsored by the Fundamental Space Biology Program of the United States‘ space agency, NASA. The task of the contest is for students to develop designs for a permanent orbital space colony. For his design, Teodorescu was awarded a visit to a NASA base in the USA.

Concerning the contest, Teodorescu said, “I designed a space colony which is called ‘Temis’, a personification of the Greek goddess of wisdom. The project is made up of four parts.” He said that the development of the space colony in his design has two phases – “Firstly, there is the construction period, in which the Moon is used as a base for extracting and processing materials. This would last about one year. After that, there would be a period of 4-5 years, in which the population of the colony would reach 10,000.” In 15 years, Teodorescu projects in his design that the population would reach 100,000, and reach the stage where the colony would be able to sustain itself and to start developing its own economic, social and educational systems.

During the design’s conception, Teodorescu was aided by his teachers, Adrian Koriloff, Margareta Constantinescu, Nicolae Hirtan and Lucia Miron, as well as his father Horia Neculai Teodorescu, who is a professor at the Ia?i University. Teodorescu also participated in the same contest in 2004, where he received second place. The first prize was also obtained by Romanians, more precisely a group of students from Constan?a.

The Costache Negruzzi College, founded in 1895, is, with over 1500 students, the largest secondary education facility in Ia?i, a city of 320,000 people.

Mumbai Police investigations indicate Pakistani role in 11/7 serial blasts

Sunday, October 1, 2006

Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy confirmed today that investigations had revealed the involvement of the militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba and the (banned) Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in the 11 July 2006 bombing of the city’s commuter rail network. He also stated that the attacks had been masterminded by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and carried out by Pakistani and Indian nationals.

Fifteen people, twelve of whom were directly involved in the execution of the bombings are in custody, eleven of them are Pakistani citizens.

The conspiracy to carry out the attacks, which killed 190 people, was hatched in the vicinity of Mumbai, by militants who were trained in Bahwalpur, Pakistan. The Pakistani bombers entered India in batches, some through the porous Indo-Nepal border, others via Bangladesh and some through Gujarat. They then reached Mumbai around May 25, and were sheltered in Malad and Bandra by Faizal Sheikh. Kamaluddin Ansari and Ehtasham Siddiqui, (General Secretary of SIMI, Maharashtra) were also involved in the conspiracy.

The RDX explosive used in the blasts was brought from Pakistan by a man called Ehsanullah, while the ammonium nitrate was procured locally. The explosives were assembled in Chembur by Mumbai resident Mohammad Ali, between 8 and 10 July. On the day of the attacks, the bombs (each containing 2 – 2.5 kg of RDX and 3.5 – 4 kg of ammonium nitrate) were concealed in eight pressure cookers and transported to the railway stations in taxis.

From there two member teams of bombers placed the explosives on the trains and detonated them using quartz timers. One of the militants, Saleem, a native of Lahore, could not (as was the plan) get off the train before the explosives went off, as a result of which he perished in the blast between Khar and Bandra. Of the seven Indian suspects, four (Faizal Sheikh, Kamaluddin Ansari, Ehtashan Siddiqui and Naved) have been apprehended, while a search is on for the other three.

Mr. Roy described the bombings as a “professional, precise and well-planned”. The first clue his department got was a phone call made from Navi Mumbai to a place on the Indo-Nepal border. Based on this information Kamaluddin Ansari was arrested in from Madhubani, Bihar. Narco-analysis of the other suspects revealed that they were trained in Pakistan and also helped tie up other loose ends in the case. Faizal Sheikh also revealed that he had received Rs. 60,00,000 from Pakistan in the last few years. Police also recovered 26,000 Riyals, given to him by Rizwan Devra, an ISI operative living in Dubai, from Faizal’s house.

Pakistan’s Minister of State for Information, Tariq Azim, denied the role of the ISI in the bombings, saying that his country “rejected” the accusation, and that India should provide Pakistan with “any information if they have it”. “Such allegations only give benefit to the real culprits, who escape arrest,” he said.

‘Net Neutrality Amendment’ fails in U.S. House

Saturday, June 10, 2006

On Thursday, Congress turned down the “Net Neutrality Amendment” to the Communications Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act (COPE Act) 269-152.

The COPE Act is designed to make it easier for telecommunications companies to offer cable TV service and strengthen competition. Proponents hope it would lower the price of high-speed Internet for consumer by enabling Internet service providers to bundle phone, data, video and mobile phone services. The act is the first major telecommunications bill to come before Congress in over a decade, and it passed by 321-101 vote on Thursday.

Portions of the “Net Neutrality” amendment to the COPE Act sought to assure that communication companies who provide Internet services treated all data delivery passing through their connections equally. It specified that each broadband provider has the duty “not to block, impair, degrade, discriminate against, or interfere with the ability of any person to use a broadband connection to access, use, send, receive, or offer lawful content, applications, or services over the Internet.” The amendment’s passage would have prevented AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and other broadband providers from charging content providers like Google, Yahoo, Amazon or eBay for priority access to their networks. Democrats were largely in favour of the legislation with 140 Ayes and 58 Noes, whereas only 11 Republicans voted for the measure, with 211 against.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi argued that “The imposition of additional fees for Internet content providers would unduly burden Web-based small businesses and start-ups,” and that “They would also hamper communications by noncommercial users, those using religious speech, promoting civic involvement and exercising First Amendment freedoms.”

The phone companies and their Congressional allies argued that the restrictions in the amendment would discourage investment in upgrading networks. Chief technology officer for BellSouth William L. Smith told the Washington Post that telephone companies should be able to charge companies for having their content load faster than that of competitors. “If I go to the airport, I can buy a coach standby ticket or a first-class ticket,” Smith said. “In the shipping business, I can get two-day air or six-day ground.”

The legislation has been subject to intense lobbying by telecommunication companies on one side, and content providers on the other. The bill is due to be discussed next in the Senate, where lobbying efforts from both sides are expected to intensify. The White House said that it supports the current bill.

Revenge killings follow shooting of Karachi politician

Saturday, August 7, 2010

Businesses remained closed for a second day on Wednesday in the Pakistani financial capital of Karachi, to mourn Raza Haider, a leading politician of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), assassinated on Monday. Nineteen people were killed on Tuesday in revenge killings, bringing the death toll to 49 over two days. Twenty-five shops and a number of vehicles including trucks and buses were burned in a series of arson attacks across the city.

Haider was gunned down while attending a funeral near the centre of the city. An officer at the Nazimabad police station said “[t]he number of attackers and the mode of their transport are not clear, but initial investigations suggest that there were more than two people who came on a motorcycle and they were probably backed by armed men in a car. They first shot at the legislator’s guard Khalid Khan and then entered the mosque and fired at Mr Haider who was in the ablution room.”

Following the first night of revenge attacks and arson the MQM accused its main political rival, the Awami National Party (ANP), of supporting the Islamist militants suspected of the assassination. The MQM is a coalition partner with the ANP in the national government and is known as a party that holds great potential for mass mobilization in the province of Sindh.

The Associated Press (AP) said that the MQM’s accusation “appeared to reflect the complex and vicious political and ethnic fault lines that crisscross Karachi.”

The AP also said that Sharfuddin Memon, the head of the Citizen’s Police Liason Committee had speculated that Haider’s killing may be related to a government operation against “land mafias”, who illegally occupy commercially valuable land. According to the AP’s report it is alleged that some of these mafias have the backing of political parties.

According to human rights organizations there have been more than 300 political killings in Karachi this year.

By Tuesday evening the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre had received 17 dead bodies and 55 injured. The head of the hospital, Dr Seemi Jamali, said that they had transfused 200 blood units to victims of targeted violence and that 31 gunshot victims had been operated upon that day.

This week’s wave of violence and attacks began with the assassination of Raza Haider, but due to the nature of Karachi politics the exact motive behind Haider’s murder is unclear. The Associated Press commented that the city has long been plagued by political violence between supporters of rival parties “that draw votes from different ethnic groups in the city of 16 million people.” The publication said this muddied the reasons for the bloodshed.

Rehman Malik, Pakistan’s Interior Minister was quoted by media as saying Islamist militants were likely suspects. He said that Haider had been on the extremist hit list. The BBC reported that they had been told by security officials in Karachi that there is evidence to suggest the assassination was carried out by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Pakistan’s deadliest militant group.

The BBC News website also reported that senior MQM leader Babar Ghauri had said: “Every MQM activist will now be looking to pay back the people involved in this heinous act”.

Raza Haider was laid to rest on Tuesday at the Martyr’s Graveyard in Azizabad, northern Karachi. Hundreds of MQM members and supporters attended to pay their final respects to Haider and to his guard Khalid Khan, also killed in the shooting. The funeral took place under tight security, and with activists raising slogans against the violence that has gripped the city.

More dog and cat food recalled in the United States

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Natural Balance Pet Foods has recalled some of its wet and dry food for cats and dogs after several owners said that their pets were becoming sick. The company urges owners to stop feeding their pets the food immediately.

The brands recalled include Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food.

Last month, Menu Foods recalled all of its 60 million products of dry and wet dog and cat food after pets began to fall ill and in some cases died of kidney failure.

“Natural Balance, Pacoima, CA, is issuing a voluntary nationwide recall for all of its Venison dog products and the dry Venison cat food only, regardless of date codes. The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Recent laboratory results show that the products contain melamine. We believe the source of the melamine is a rice protein concentrate. Natural Balance has confirmed this morning that some production batches of these products may contain melamine,” said a press released issued by Natural Balance.

The FDA states that the “investigation remains open and active, and the agency continues to follow leads to get closer to the root cause of the problem and to ensure that all contaminated product is removed from the market.”

“The source of the melamine appears to be a rice protein concentrate, which was recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination,” said the press release.

Bags, cans and zip lock bags of the food are expected to be the most affected.

“The products are packaged in bags, cans and zip lock treat bags and sold in pet specialty stores and PetCo nationally. No other Natural Balance products are involved in this voluntary recall as none of our other formulas include the rice protein concentrate,” added the press release.

The company states that the food, Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food, are the only brands affected by the recall.

A Review Of The Arbonne International Income Opportunity

By Brian Garvin

Arbonne International is a direct selling company that is operated in California, US. They make a line of light quality skin care, color cosmetics, weight loss, aromatherapy and nutrition products that are exclusive to their company. They say they are based on natural and botanical principles.

As I have done some research, I have found that they market through independent consultants that are networked throughout the company. It appears that the cost to become a consultant is very reasonable. The cost for a starter kit is only $29 and the super kit can be purchased for $65.

The company is known for their consultants to earn enough to pay for product, but not much more. There are no territories provided like you have with Avon, so you neighbor may have already sold the neighborhood. You will earn the most by network marketing; this is where your residual income comes from. Cold marketing and prospecting will be necessary to maintain your position in the company in order to continue to receive commissions. You won’t be allowed to sell online unless you are using Arbonne’s web template website and paying them a monthly fee.

Arbonne buys their formulas from labs and chemists that make and sell to other cosmetic companies. They are not exclusive to Arbonne. And Mr. Botiglierri does not work exclusively with or for Arbonne. He actually develops products for several other cosmetic companies. Which means there are many companies with similar formulas.

Arbonne also claims to be a Swiss company when it has been proven that they have never had a license or produced any product there at all. There are many people that write to beauty consultants on the Internet asking about the Arbonne products and if the claims they make are true. Their biggest claim is that mineral oil is dangerous to the skin and this is the reason for high rates of skin cancer in the US.

The company maintains mineral oil interferes with skin functions and delivery systems. Cosmetics-grade mineral oil is not a problem, nor has ever been, for skin. In fact, mineral oil is one of the mildest ingredients for making dry skin look and feel softer. The effectiveness cannot be disputed.

Arbonne International has shown that the success rate is low, and they appear to have a high drop out rate. There is also a lot of competition making it so much harder to be successful. The greatest obstacle in the sales end of things is that Arbonne International products can be purchased online on sites such as Ebay or Craigslist, much cheaper.

And this can happen with any product that we sell in network marketing. The products are sold at such a high price, and there is always someone willing to sell it for less. They may be trying to get rid of inventory. No matter the reason, the problem still exists.

If the product is good, it works and it can sell, then see if it is something you would like to do. Check into the site further and make sure that financially it is stable and its reputation is of good standing. With a lot of commitment and effort, you should be able to make some money at this business. But check it all out before you sign up.
