5 Benefits Of Cognitive Supplements For Busy People

In our current economic landscape, using any avenue you can to get ahead is necessary. Whether you’re a busy Wall Street trader, a stressed out college student or a tired work-from-home parent, your success depends on you being able to stay focused, energized, alert and motivated. Drinking several cups of coffee or slamming down energy drinks is simply part of the cost of doing business. However, many busy people are finding that cognitive supplements are a better solution to keep them alert and attentive. Cognitive supplements are herbal health supplements, like you see in vitamin stores, that contain a variety of ingredients designed to improve certain aspects of mental function, including focus, concentration, memory or attention. They also often contain ingredients to increase energy, as being tired is the quickest way to decrease your cognitive abilities. Here are five reasons why cognitive supplements are extremely beneficial to busy people: More EnergyBrain supplements can give you much more energy than a cup of coffee or an energy drink, which both contain caffeine that will stimulate your mind for a few hours before wearing off to leave you more tired than before! Cognitive Supplements that use Vitamin B12 and Taurine for energy provide a natural boost that will keep you going for up to six hours with no crashes when they wear off. More FocusCognitive Supplements are specifically designed to help your focus and attention. They contain ingredients that activate certain enzymes and invigorate certain natural occurrences in your brain, allowing you to be more attentive and alert. Studies have shown that increasing enzyme production in the prefrontal cortex of your brain is most effective for improving focus short and long-term. No CaloriesUnlike creamy coffees and sugary energy drinks, cognitive supplements have no calories. While this may not benefit your brain directly, it is a definite positive to your waist line! Plus, studies have shown that having leaner body mass is conducive to being less tired and fatigued. Cutting extra calories anywhere in your diet is always a bonus, especially since the average small coffee with cream and sugar has 120 calories, and the average can of energy drink has 150-240 calories!Budget-FriendlyAnother reason why cognitive supplements are a great coffee substitute is because they are much more budget friendly! While a cheap cup of coffee may only cost $0.50 – $1.00, you might be indulging once, twice, or more per day. Your monthly coffee budget could easily be $60+ per month. Energy drinks cost even more; drink one every day, and you’ll be around the same cost. Cognitive supplements are much less expensive, usually only costing around $25-$40 for a one month supply. Plus, since you won’t be having caffeine withdrawals, you won’t feel the need to take a supplement on your day off or on weekends!Longer-Lasting ResultsStudies have shown that caffeine from a beverage takes about 45 minutes to reach peak levels in your bloodstream, which lasts in your body for about two or three hours. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, the peak effects will be lessened by your body’s tolerance, and the effects will wear off even sooner. Mental enhancing supplements are designed to provide longer-lasting effects by providing ingredients with longer half-lives, so they stay concentrated in your blood stream for a longer period of time. Caffeine is only a stimulant; once the effects wear off and it leaves your body, there are no more benefits. Cognitive supplements work on increasing and enhancing naturally occurring processes in your brain, so even after the supplement has left your system, you are left with better mental function than you had before.

Sri Lanka accepts ‘One China’ policy

Monday, March 28, 2005

Sri Lankan Ministry Of Foreign Affairs said the government accepts Beijing’s “One China” policy and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic Of China, according to a March 17 press release.

The current foreign Ministry communiqué, recollects the press communiqué issued by the Foreign Ministers of China and Sri Lanka in Beijing in December 2004. Sri Lanka reiterated its support for Chinese legislative measures to oppose forces seeking to secede from China.

In the communiqué, the Sri Lankan government categorically mentioned, Sri Lanka opposes secessionist actions in any form and fully supports a process of peaceful national reunification. The Sri Lankan government further said, it welcomes growing cross-Straits economic and other exchanges such as the promotion of direct trade, mail, air and shipping links.

In the mean time, Chinese President Hu Jintao issued a presidential order regarding the promulgation of the Anti-Secession Law on March 14, which was adopted at the Third Session of the Tenth National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature.

‘Earth-based life can survive in hydrogen-rich atmospheres’: MIT professor Dr Seager tells Wikinews about her research on organisms thriving in oxygen-less environment

Friday, December 25, 2020

In May, a study was published in journal Nature Astronomy, conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Dr Sara Seager and other researchers, showing single-celled organisms like Escherichia coli (E. coli) and yeast can thrive in both 100% hydrogen gas and helium atmospheres. Wikinews discussed the findings with Dr Seager to know more about her research.

Life has not been observed in any habitat other than Earth, which has an oxygen-rich environment. While Earth’s atmosphere is dominated by nitrogen gas, oxygen is essential for advanced living organisms. Some species of microorganisms do not require oxygen for metabolism, called anærobic organisms, such as methanogens which rely on carbon-dioxide while releasing methane.

Researchers used Escherichia coli strain K-12 and Saccharomyces cerevisiæ strain S288C for this experiment. The two microorganisms were kept in four different environments: one being 100% air, and the other three being anærobic environments: 100% H2, 100% He, and 80%-20% N2-CO2. The environments were kept in at 28° Celsius. The researchers made sure the anaerobic experiment environments were anoxic, and had installed oxygen sensors to report fluctuation in the oxygen level. They monitored growth of E. coli using optical density measurement, and they used a hæmocytometer for yeast.

The study reported the organisms were reproducing normally in both 100% H2 and 100% He environment. However, the sigmoid-shaped growth curve was not on par with 100% air. E. coli and yeast switch from ærobic respiration, which uses oxygen, to anærobic respiration and fermentation. Both processes are less efficient and do not produce as much energy as ærobic respiration.

E. coli in an 80%-20% N2-CO2 environment had slower growth rate as CO2 dissolves and makes the liquid medium acidic. Such reduction in growth rate was not observed for yeast cultures, which can thrive in acidic environments. However, yeast’s growth rate in 100% air was far greater than in the other three media. The likely reason for this significant difference was lack of oxygen for non-respiratory purposes, the research reported. Oxygen is essential for synthesis of biochemicals such as heme and sterols, which are important for yeast. In atmospheres lacking oxygen to produce these chemicals, yeast fungi have stunted growth rate.

With this discovery, Dr Seager said scientists can now observe even more planets to study for habitable life.

“There’s a diversity of habitable worlds out there, and we have confirmed that Earth-based life can survive in hydrogen-rich atmospheres. We should definitely add those kinds of planets to the menu of options when thinking of life on other worlds, and actually trying to find it”, Professor Seager said.

A rocky planet with expanded hydrogen-rich atmosphere should be easy to detect using the emerging technologies. Hydrogen and helium gas have very low density. Dr Seager said, “It’s kind of hard to get your head around, but that light gas just makes the atmosphere more expansive […] And for telescopes, the bigger the atmosphere is compared to the backdrop of a planet’s star, the easier it is to detect.”

The research paper noted rocky planets which have radius below 1.7 times Earth’s radius (Earth’s radius is roughly 6360 km) can support a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, if water were to react with Iron.

The research paper reported E. coli releases a number of gases when it lives in hydrogen-based atmosphere including ammonia, methanethiol, dimethylsulfide, carbonyl sulfide, carbonyl disulfide and nitrous oxide. These gases can serve as biosignature gases which can help astronomers detect and study potential life on exoplanets.

Confirming life can thrive in atmospheres that do not have oxygen, Seager said “Astronomers should keep an open mind as to which planets are worth searching for life”.

With NASA’s James Webb Telescope scheduled to be deployed next year, the paper suggests researchers could observe smaller exoplanets that orbit small red-dwarf stars.

The Step By Step Project Management Process

The step-by-step project management process

by

liss

In the service industry and the manufacturing industry companies take each new assignment as a project and work on it. Handling projects is not an easy task. It needs lots of research. A project that should be executed in a perfect way needs step by step approach and effective communication and co-coordination skills. Each industry has its own specific project management tools. However, the basic approach towards the project is almost same.

Some of the steps followed in the project management process are introduction, planning and designing, allotting resources, execution, monitoring, control and termination.

Launch of the project- This is the first stage of the project management process and it invites ideas. To make a new product or to launch a new service, we have to first set the target. It is in this stage the nature and scope of the project is identified. Some of the steps involved in the initiation stage are as follows:-

-Aim of the project

-Scope and nature of the project

-Resources to be allocated

-Cost and benefits

-Risks involved in the project

-Referring case studies

-Future of the project

By getting a proper answer to all these questions, we will get a clear picture about what we have to do in this project ?

Planning and designing In this step the objective of the project will be divided into different sections. So, creating a project plan is one of the key steps in the project management process. In the project plan the project coordinator will create a list of tasks that should be performed in each module. Then for each task a specific time will be allotted. The physical resource and the manual resource required for each task will be also recorded. The project plan will also have options to renegotiate the deadline and employing additional resources in case of any emergency. This makes it easy to handle each and every section of the project in an effective way. After planning the project, the next step is the designing of the project. In the designing section, each and every assignment will be designed as per the project requirement. Some industries use charts and graphs to explain the project. It is the planning and the designing section that gives a complete skeletal framework of the project. The planning section also includes budget allocation and team selection.

Allocation of resources After planning and designing, the project coordinator will allocate resources as per the requirement. As the need for resources vary according to the project, assigning resources is not a simple task.

Execution of the project The project will be executed according to the work defined in the project plan. The execution process involves allocation of manual and physical resources, integrating different types of activities and performing it. The products that should be delivered are manufactures in the project execution unit.

Monitoring Each and every section of the project should be tracked and managed in a well mannered way. Monitoring helps in identifying issues and correcting it. Monitoring and controlling process always go hand in hand.

Termination – When the deliverable products are produced according to the order, the last step is the termination. This is one of the crucial steps in the project plan. Here evaluation of the product and the project plan is taking place. If the manufacture things that the product has market, then there are chances for restarting the project. The scope of the project will be mentioned in the project closure report. Most of the product manufacturing facilities are located in remote locations, it needs proper security. You can find various types of security systems in the market. One of the widely used security system is the ADT Security services system. By shifting to ADT Security, your alarm service will be monitored by the ADT monitoring center staff on a on a 24/7 basis.

Ann is a freelancer. She is planning to a research on a particular product in the coming month. In this regard she collected information related to project management and wrote an article on it. When she goes out on research purpose, her home will be guarded by

The Wii, Nintendo’s next generation console, launches in North America

Sunday, November 19, 2006

Nintendo has released its newest video game console in North America. Known as the Wii, the system and games have an MSRP of US$249.99 and US$49.99 respectively. The North American release is to be followed by the December 2nd launch in Japan and the December 8th launch in Europe.

Launched officially at midnight, more than a thousand people gathered in New York’s Time Square to be among the first to buy one of the Wii. In contrast to the crowds that have challenged crowd control officials over the last two days in connection with the launch of Sony’s Playstation 3, the Wii crowds have been much calmer. Many observers attribute this to the fact that Nintendo had more than ten times as many Wii consoles available on launching day than Sony did for their PS3 that had been hounded by part shortages in manufacturing right up to the day of launch.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that several tough choices had been made in the design of the Wii. The company decided to develop a new way of playing games with revolutionary controllers instead of following the PS3 and the Xbox down the road of stunning graphic and multimedia options. This produced a console with a much talked-about sensor/controller design and the lowest price point of the three major consoles. While not having a DVD player or high-definition TV capabilities, the Wii retails for about $250 while its competitors the Xbox 360 and PS3 retail for about $400 and $600 respectively.

While the Wii will launch with several games available, one of its advertised advantages is that the new console is largely compatible with older games made for the GameCube, giving the new console an instant and extensive launching library. A GameCube controller will be needed to play GameCube games with the Wii. Several hardware items that GameCube games may be expecting, such as the modem or broadband adapter or the GameBoy player are not supported on the Wii.

Across the country in Los Angeles about 500 people were waiting for the doors to open at Universal City Walk’s Game Stop store. Fearing that the Wii introduction might be as contentious as the PS3 debut just a few days ago, the store handed out numbered wristbands to the throng. No problems were reported.

Find Scrapbooking Titles In Music, Movies And Television

By Christine Perry

Are you ever stuck for a perfect phrase for your scrapbooking title? Maybe you just stick with the date or the seasons like summer or fall. Some scrapbookers title every page with the name of the subject in the photograph. It might be a place, like Disney World or the beach, or it could be a person’s name like Susan or Grandpa. Being creative with scrapbooking titles adds interest to a page layout just like embellishments and borders. Music, movies and television can offer inspiration and ideas for your scrapbooking titles that will capture the mood and theme of your next page layout.

Scrapbooking Titles in Music

Music inspires us all. How often have you heard a song on the radio and it immediately brings back a memory from years ago. It might be a song that was playing when you first dated your husband, or maybe it’s a song from your high school days that reminds you of your senior year. Songs have the ability to spark memories in all of us.

For your next page layout, look to music for your inspiration. Song titles are great sources for scrapbooking page titles. Quoting a single song title may be all you need to say to start singing that song in your head. Some examples of song titles that could be used as scrapbooking page titles are “Simply Irresistible,” “Brown-eyed Girl,” and “You Are My sunshine.” Keep a list of possible song titles that would work well on your scrapbooking projects.

Sometimes it’s the lyrics themselves that inspire us. You might want to use more than just the title. A lyric like, “These are the moments and I could not ask for more,” will add just the right mood to a treasured photograph.

Scrapbooking Titles in Television and Movies

Consider adapting television show titles like, “The Brady Bunch” and “Days of Our Lives” to a scrapbook page. Maybe something simple like “Survivor” or “Lost” says it all. Movie titles, such as, “Mission Impossible,” “Little Miss Sunshine” or “Back to the Future,” might be perfect for one of your layouts.

Many TV and movie characters are known for a certain phrase or saying. These quotes often work well as scrapbooking titles. Does your favorite TV or movie character have a particular line that just fits with one of your photographs or scrapbooking pages? Think of phrases like, “How Sweet It Is,” “May the Force Be With You” or “Here’s Looking At You, Kid.”

Scrapbooking Titles in Commercials and Advertising

Slogans, sayings and jingles can all be a source of inspiration for scrapbooking titles. Those catchy phrases we never seem to forget also make fun headlines for our scrapbook pages. Scrapbooking titles can be found in the lyrics of commercial jingles, as well as, in the slogans on print advertising. The next time you are considering fast forwarding through the commercials of a taping of your favorite television show, you might consider listening to the advertisements for scrapbooking title ideas. There are many slogans that could easily be adapted to a page layout title. Consider using “I’m Lovin’ It,” or “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom,” or perhaps, “It’s the Real Thing” or “A Diamond Is Forever.”

Movies, music and television can inspire a huge list of potential scrapbooking titles for just about any page layout. The next time you need ideas for a scrapbook page title just turn on your radio or television for inspiration.

Gordon Brown says the UK won’t run out of gas

Sunday, January 10, 2010

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Saturday that the UK’s natural gas reserves will not run out in spite of record demand. This spike in demand is caused by the recent cold weather.File:Latenight-1.jpg

A supplier, National Grid, issued two “balancing alerts”, which mean a possible supply shortfall, which were promptly lifted. A spokeswoman for the company said that there was a possible shortfall of 35 million cubic metres (1.2 billion cubic feet). This third balancing alert is expected to last for the next few days, and is said not to be due to the cold weather – which is expected to continue for at least a week – but due to problems in Norwegian gas fields.

Another staple related to the cold snap, rock salt, is feared in short supply. The Automobile Association reports that supplies have been reduced by 250,000 tonnes over the last ten years. Local governments pledged to conserve supplies through a 25% reduction in the amount used; 12,000 tonnes of white salt have been redirected for use on roads.

Non-profits have asked that the allowance for gas money be temporarily raised for pensioners. The Red Cross reports that it is having the highest volume of aid being given out in nearly 30 years.

The cold snap has caused at least two further deaths, a 90-year-old woman who had frozen to death in her garden in Barnsley, and a 42-year-old who was found frozen in Newcastle, taking the total to 26.

Gene therapy trial for skin cancer cures two terminal patients

Friday, September 1, 2006

Results of gene therapy trials at the US National Cancer Institute, Bethesda to fight cancer published online yesterday by the scientific journal Science show some levels of success. However experts have warned that despite the promise more work is needed for this to become a viable cure.

Dr Stephen Rosenberg, who lead the research team, said “It’s important to emphasize this is a highly experimental treatment that’s still in the course of development.”

The team treated 17 terminal skin cancer patients with modified cells from their immune systems. The technique uses genetically modified white blood cells (more specifically T cells) to attack and kill the cancer cells. Of the 17 subjects only 2 were cured of the disease (an aggressive form of skin cancer called a melanoma which is usually fatal in advanced stages). Before the treatment, which lasted 18 months, the patients were only expected to live for up to 6 months. The remaining 15 patients were not affected by the treatment.

One of the successful patients was Mark Origer (53) from Wisconsin. He has been fighting cancer since first being diagnosed in 1999. After finding out about the new trial on the internet he applied and, after interviews, was accepted along with 16 other candidates. The treatment removed Origer’s melanoma and also shrunk another tumor in his liver – to the extent it could be removed surgically. Doctors confirmed he was free of the disease last week, nearly 2 years after treatment began. A second man (39) was cleared of his cancer which had spread to the lungs, liver and lymph nodes. Cancer that progresses to the lymph nodes is usually untreatable and fatal.

T cells can attack and destroy bacteria and other harmful cells like cancer cells. However cancer cells sometimes reduce the signals on their outer surface by which they are recognised, so the immune system cannot affect them. Gene therapy involves modifying some of a patients T cells to contain a new receptor. (Receptors are what enable the immune cell to identify harmful cells, like those corrupted by viruses. The new receptor is inserted with the use of a viral vector, i.e. a virus made safe to insert the receptor in the cell.

In the trial, T Cells were removed from each patient and modified in the laboratory. Patients underwent chemotherapy to kill most of their current immune system, which was replaced by the mutated cells. The modified cells successfully survived after injection into the body – making up 10% of the subject’s T cell count during the first 2 months. The team is now looking for ways to enable the cells to survive longer and in greater numbers.

Experts have called this a significant technical advance but warn that more patients need testing and the technique refining before any conclusive results can be drawn. Dr Edel O’Toole, consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesman, said: “I think that the success of this approach in two patients shows promise, however 15 patients did not respond to the treatment suggesting that further work is needed to optimise this approach for all patients, which could take many years.”

Rosenberg now hopes to run a new trial with possibly stronger gene therapy treatments, he is currently awaiting FDA approval.

Gene therapy was much hyped after it’s first successful application in so called “bubble boys” (patients with severe combined immunodeficiency). After follow-up, these trials were stopped when it was discovered that three of eleven patients in one trial had developed leukemia.

Bringing Up Puppy How To Raise A Havanese

By Fiona A Kelly

Havanese puppies are sweet and lovable. However they do require a lot of time and training, so potential owners should make sure they are able to provide for a pup before taking the plunge. In the end, the time and effort it takes to raise a Havanese puppy is worth it. Completely caring for a Havanese puppy requires a flexible schedule, something that many busy families dont have. The aspects of Havanese puppy care, which include grooming, training, and exercising, might seem overwhelming at first. However, the end result makes up for all work involved. Though Havanese puppies make great family pets, it is important to consider whether or not a Havanese pup is conducive with a busy family lifestyle. These puppies require time and devotion from a loving family, and they have the potential to enrich the lives of the family members as well.

Havanese puppies make a great addition to any family. Perhaps one of the most popular aspects of these toy dogs is their size. They have acquired a large fan base among families with young children. Also, Havanese pups get along extremely well with other animals, making them a great choice for families who already have dogs or cats.

Havanese puppies are sweet and lovable dogs. Though they are intelligent and eager to satisfy, the care of Havanese puppies can be somewhat difficult. There are many elements of raising a Havanese puppy, and they all require time and patience on behalf of the owner. Before adopting a Havanese puppy, make sure that you are willing to devote the time needed to take care of it. If you have the means to provide and care for a Havanese puppy, and you are willing to put time into training, your reward will be a constant companion who you can truly call your best friend.

Despite their loving and sweet personalities, many people shy away from adopting Havanese puppies. This is because Havanese puppies tend to require a lot of training. Compared to many other dogs, they are somewhat difficult to housebreak. Because these small dogs have relatively small bladders, potty training them is one of the first trials a new Havanese puppy owner will face. Yet, with patience, this is a simple milestone to overcome. Another problem that Havanese puppy owners run into is grooming. Because Havanese pups do not shed, part of Havanese puppy care includes an occasional haircut.

Finally, exercise is another aspect of raising a Havanese pup that some might consider an inconvenience. The energetic and playful personalities of these dogs require a daily walk, unless they have a fenced in backyard to play around in all day. With the proper care and training, a Havanese puppy will grow up to be obedient and affectionate.

For families looking to adopt a Havanese puppy, their first step should be to consider what would be required of them as pet owners. Havanese pups can be high-maintenance, and their care is no easy task. Raising Havanese puppies requires both time and effort on the owners partand many busy moms and dads dont have the time to give. Additionally, it is important to make sure that you can provide for your petso there is a monetary commitment as well.

After assessing the commitment you will need to make in order to own a Havanese puppy, potential owners should next look at their own life styles. Is it possible to incorporate a new puppy into your life? For many blossoming families, the answer is no. Those who determine that they can love and raise a Havanese puppy are in for a rewarding experience. These sweet, affectionate pets will love you right back!
