Different Kitchen Island Styles

Submitted by: Mark Greenfield

Modern houses are designed to really suit the modern world that we have today. From living rooms, bed rooms, patios, bath rooms and even kitchens have a way of modernizing the styles and structures of the rooms inside the house. But have you ever heard of kitchen islands in your kitchen? Sounds weird, right?

Kitchen islands have become very popular as a new part of the kitchen in terms of kitchen innovations. It does not literally mean land surrounded by water as what we may think when we hear about an island. Actually, it is a striking and eye-catching part of your kitchen that can provide different functions in your kitchen. It can serve as storage for your things or a working table for your food preparation and others. There are a lot of usages for a kitchen island depending on your need or your preferences.

Basically, a kitchen island looks like an ordinary table having legs and a flat counter on top that is usually placed at the center of your kitchen. There are many types for your selection and they also vary in sizes as well.

Customized-Style: This is a type of island where you can create a unique style for your own island. You may choose the style that is convenient for you to use and the right size for your own kitchen. This must not be too small or too big when placed in your kitchen. A customized-style will also allow you to choose the right color for your preference and will surely fit for your everyday use. Although you can get exactly what you want and design it to match your existing kitchen, it is obviously the most expensive option.

Multi-Purpose Style: This type of island may be bigger in size since this will become an all in-one table for you. This can offer you a lot of choices; it will serve as your food preparation space, a place for your oven, storage and shelves for your utensils. You can also add a breakfast counter on your kitchen island as well.

Island-wheel style: This type of island is like a counter but has wheels. This kind is convenient to use because it does not need extra space on your kitchen. Having wheels, there is no difficulty in transferring the island from one place to the other since it is not stationary. However, installing a sink and other appliances is not possible.

Kitchen islands have different shapes. Some may have the letter L form. Others may have a square, round, oval or rectangular shape. Either way, you can choose your own style and shape as long as it is convenient and easy for you to use. Aside from that, it is very important that your island should be well lit so that you can work properly in your kitchen. Kitchen islands can be built to suit small kitchens, large kitchens and even can be placed outdoors.

Having the right type of kitchen island for you will surely make your kitchen attractive functional and eye-catching!

Australian government provides $15.8 million for North Adelaide Technical College

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Australian Minister for Vocational Education and Training, Gary Hardgrave has announced the government will provide AU$15.8 million to establish an Australian Technical College in North Adelaide. The minister said the government was entering into a partnership with the Archdiocese of Adelaide and consortium of industrial and manufacturing companies.

The North Adelaide college will be located in Elizabeth and be operated as an independent non-government school. The college is one of 25 to be established across the country.

Enrolments at the college will begin in 2007 and will offer courses in areas where identified skills shortages exist in the North Adelaide region, specifically – engineering, construction, electronics and cooking.

Mr Hardgrave said that the proposed college had been popular among the North Adelaide business community. “This important initiative has been well received by North Adelaide business and industry, and will help to address skills needs and provide opportunities for those in greatest need, including a lot of Indigenous students in the region,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“The fact that this College is being led by local employers, local government and other key stakeholders, means it will be truly industry and community driven,” he said.

Australian Technical Colleges were established to cater for year 11 and 12 students who wish to do an apprenticeship as part of their school education.

The Australian Education Union has expressed a number of concerns about the model put forward by the government. In a report, they claim that trade facilities at TAFE colleges (operated by state governments) will deteriorate as funding is diverted to the ATCs. The union is also concerned that ATCs are supposed to be selective VET schools. According to the union they will have selective entry and preferential funding. It is feared that teachers will be lured away from schools and TAFE colleges to higher paid positions in ATCs.

The Education Union suggested that the government invest in schools that already offer vocational education programs.

Russian astrologist sues NASA for Deep Impact test

Monday, July 4, 2005

Russian astrologist Marina Bai has filed suit in Moscow asking for 8.7 billion rubles (311 million U.S. dollars) because, she claims, the NASA Deep Impact mission damaged her business by altering her ability to provide accurate horoscopes, harmed her “system of spiritual values,” and will “interfere with the natural life of the universe.”

“It is obvious that elements of the comet’s orbit, and correspondingly the ephemeris, will change after the explosion, which interferes with my astrology work and distorts my horoscope,” Bai was quoted in the daily newspaper, Izvestia.

NASA has refuted similar accusations by pointing out that this impact is only a new addition to many previous collisions already on the comet.

On July 4, NASA successfully crashed a probe into the Tempel 1 comet in hopes the debris kicked up in the resulting explosion could shed light in the building blocks of the early solar system.

The lawsuit, originally filed in June, has not yet been scheduled for an initial hearing, according to Russian authorities.
