KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

Dead children found in car in Sussex, UK

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The bodies of two children were found this morning in a car in Heathfield, East Sussex, in the United Kingdom. A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of the murders.

The boy and girl were both less than five years old, and were discovered at 11:46 this morning (GMT) when Sussex police officers forced their way into the vehicle, which was parked on Mill Close in Heathfield. The woman, who has yet to be identified, had visited Heathfield police station earlier this morning to report “an incident”, and was later arrested on suspicion of murder. The police say that they have identified the bodies. The identities will be revealed when the post mortem examinations take place, which is scheduled for next Thursday.

I would like to reassure people that it is fully contained and there is no threat to anyone in the area

The woman was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital, and has not yet been interviewed by the police. She is believed to be from Surrey but have connections with the Heathfield area. Mill Close, the road on which the incident occurred, has been closed, according to a police spokeswoman, who said, “An investigation is now under way and the area around the scene is cordoned off.” Chief Inspector Julia Pope, Wealden district policing commander, said, “This is a very tragic incident, but I would like to reassure people that it is fully contained and there is no threat to anyone in the area. We will move to restore normality and access to Mill Close as quickly as possible.” A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said, “We sent an ambulance and two response cars but sadly two young children were pronounced dead at the scene.”

US unemployment rate surpasses 10%

Friday, November 6, 2009

The unemployment rate in the United States has surpassed ten percent, according to figures released by the US Department of Labor on Friday.

The jobless rate, now at 10.2%, is the highest it has been since April 1983, and was an increase over September’s level of 9.8%. 190,000 jobs in total were lost last month, and 8.2 million total people have become unemployed since the recession officially began in December 2007.

“It’s pretty disappointing overall. Job losses are not moderating as quickly as I had hoped despite those earlier indicators on jobs,” economic analyst Richard Franulovich at the Westpac financial services company said.

Some economists say the jobless rate could reach 10.5% next year because employers are still reluctant to hire. Economist James Shugg predicted the weakness in the US job market is expected to continue.

“It is a lot easier for firms to make the decision not to lay someone off than it is actually to decide to take someone on,” Shugg said. “I think we are still at that point, the firms are getting less aggressive in terms of job cutting. But putting people on is still a little way to come yet.”

Despite the news, most analysts have said that this is an improvement in a way, as the rate of job losses has slowed in the past year. This January, for instance, saw 741,000 job cuts. The US gross domestic product also grew by 3.5% from July through September. President Barack Obama, however, suggested that the jobless rate may still continue to rise in the immediate future. “We are just not where we need to be yet. We’ve got a long way to go,” he said.

The Importance Of Pat Testing

Submitted by: Steve. A Shaw

PAT testing is an abbreviation of portable appliance testing. It simply refers to the process employed in checking the safety and performance of electrical appliances. This is an exercise which is normally aimed at establishing the efficiency and safety of electrical equipments within the house or the office. Electric gadgets are used all over and are vulnerable to mechanical technicalities most of which may cause serious damage to people and property.

Professionally, employers are legally required to ensure that all their electrical devices are maintained regularly. When and how electronic devices are assessed depends on the guidelines provided by health and safety executives. Therefore, if you have electrical devices around you, it is important to take note of this basic knowledge that will help you keep safe at all times and avoid fatal accidents in future.

You can engage in visual checks of your appliance since you are regularly using the device. This way, you will be able to identify frayed or loose cables after which the necessary remedy measures can be put in place. By doing this, you will not have to worry, instead you will simply have to wait for the next assessment being that possible potential dangers will have been prevented. Remember, visual checks are a must and even trained testers must do this before doing any form of maintenance.

This kind of testing should not be done by anyone. This is because it calls for professional training and certification meaning that official approval is required for such kind of work. People with city and guides qualification can do this kind of work best owing to their professional skills and levels of specialisation. Therefore, if you are not qualified, it is highly recommended that you refrain from such an exercise. You may damage your machine or equipment.

As a matter of fact, there are specialized testing equipments which are needed if you are going to perform a good test. Moreover, the result of each test also relies heavily on the judgment of the tester hence most people are advised to seek professional services. They are also preferred when you want to have comprehensive service that a layman can not provide such that when your appliance fails, the technician can repair it on the spot or advice if you need to replace it.

PAT testing is not a process that can be just done haphazardly. This is because there are features you have to factor in before doing your test. For instance, the level of testing that each appliance needs will depend on a number of factors such as which class the appliance falls under. And the classes referred to here are those which are defined by IEC-International Electro-technical Commission.

When it comes to choosing the tools which are used during the process, there are a number of issues that should be put into consideration. For instance, one must have a clear understanding of the specific requirements for the job as well as the capabilities of the tester. Equipped with these details, you can proceed with the testing process.

Pass/fail devices which many people use will simply provide you with details of either a pass or fail and nothing else. But there are more advanced testers which will fundamentally provide a more advanced and in-depth metrics while testing your appliances. Such high end PAT testing devices are mostly found with reliable and credible companies whose focus is keeping you safe and maintaining your equipment in the best possible performance state.

Peter Andren, Australian MP dies aged 61

Sunday, November 4, 2007

Australian federal member of Calare, Peter Andren died on Saturday after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was aged 61.

Mr Andren who had held the seat since being elected in 1996 had previously announced his intention to run for the senate after his electorate was changed for the 2007 federal election. After Mr Andren was diagnosed with cancer in July, he announced that he would be retiring from politics at the election.

Mr Andren’s 1996 campaign platform was based upon retaining services in regional Australia, particularly banking, health and telecommunications. Over the next 11 years, Mr Andren’s primary vote grew and at the 2001 and 2004 elections was elected without preferences, achieving a majority primary vote.

In 2001, Mr Andren disagreed with his electorate on refugees. The electorate supported the government’s tough stance but Mr Andren could not support the government’s border protection measures. Following this, a vicious letter-box campaign rose up saying “you might like Peter Andren … but you won’t like what he’s got to say about keeping our borders safe”.

Fellow NSW independent member, Tony Windsor said Mr Andren’s stance on asylum seekers was just one sign of his compassion and strong belief in human rights.

Mr Windsor described Mr Andren as the “conscience” of parliament. “Peter Andren was a true representative of the people of the Calare electorate, a man of the highest integrity and the conscience of the Parliament,” he said.

“He was subjected to vitriol from time to time within the Parliament over issues, but if he believed in something he stuck to it. He didn’t compromise and I think that’s a lasting legacy that Peter will leave.”

Prime Minister John Howard said despite having a difference of opinion with Mr Andren on many issues, he had a lot of respect for him.

“I respected his skills as a local member,” he said.

“Mr Andren and I frequently disagreed on major issues and he made no bones about that and I made no bones about it either but that didn’t stop me respecting him and acknowledging the tremendous work he did for his electorate.”

Labor leader Kevin Rudd described Mr Andren as a true independent.

“Peter Andren will be a great loss to the Australian parliament,” he said.

“He was a man of principle, a man of commitment, a man who was an absolute independent.”

Leader of the Greens, Bob Brown said Mr Andren was an example of how a politician should be.

“He was an exemplar of representative politics for his electorate and the people of Calare kept returning him with a bigger and bigger majority,” he said.

“[If] anybody ever asks me how a politician should be, I am going to say, ‘Look at the record of Peter Andren'”

“He was a great Australian representative and he is a great loss to this country.”

During his political career, Mr Andren fought the sale of Telstra, introduced a bill to allow MPs to opt-out of their generous superannuation schemes, opposed the Iraq war and campaigned on environmental issues.

Mr Andren was born at Gulargambone, near Dubbo in Western NSW in 1946. Before he entered politics Mr Andren worked as a teacher before moving into journalism. Mr Andren worked as a news producer in Sydney for the Seven and Nine networks, before moving back to regional NSW where he worked as the news editor for both Radio 2GZ and Prime Television.

Mr Andren is survived by his partner and two sons.

Firefighters battle fire at Los Angeles International Airport

Thursday, June 1, 2006

A fuel storage tank at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) caught fire today.

The 1-million gallon storage tank caught fire at about 8:30 a.m. local time (PDT) according to Ron Myers, a spokesman for the LAX fire department. Myers said that planes were not at risk and no flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted. No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered.

The fire is said to have been caused by a spark from a welder performing work on the tank. Reports say the fuel container was mostly empty, but authorities are still investigating.

Your Options For Drainage Systems In Cambridge, Ma

byadmin

There are many things that can be done to address flooding issues inside of a home. Sometimes, changing the grading of the property surrounding the home can help move excess water away during heavy downpours. In addition, waterproofing basement walls can be very helpful in reducing actual water coming in through the basement walls or to reduce higher level of humidity in the basement area itself.

Whether it’s grading, gutters, or waterproofing, there are times where homes are in locations that are extremely sensitive to flooding, and all the above-mentioned services may do little to stop the home from flooding. In these cases, Drainage Systems in Cambridge MA may be the only viable solution.

Standard Drains

It’s important to understand that there are different approaches that are taken when it comes to drainage systems. For example, a home may currently have a drainage system, but it simply may not be able to keep up with the amount of water that is collected during heavier or extended periods of rain. In these situations, adding on to an existing drainage system, or perhaps improving the capacity of an existing drainage system, can effectively help in preventing flooding inside and outside of the home.

The Option of a French Drain

One particularly effective drainage system is known as a French drain. This is basically an open-ended drainpipe that is buried in the ground. However, to avoid a clogged drain, which is very common with standard drains, the top of the drainage pipe, which is the one that is open, is covered with gravel. This allows debris to collect on the gravel without affecting the operation of the drain. Water will run into the perforated or open drainpipe and will be moved away from the home.

These are just a couple of the drainage systems in Cambridge MA that a home or business owner may employ when they’re having issues with flooding. In order to determine what solution is going to be right, whether it’s issues with the drainage system or issues with grading, waterproofing or the gutter system, you may want to check out Drycretewp.com. These drainage and waterproofing experts can help you decide which option is best for your home or business.

Operation to capture rebel leader surges violence in East Timor

Sunday, March 4, 2007

Several conflicts involving civilians occurred in East Timor at the same time that Australian-led peacekeeping troops stormed a town where a rebel former army officer and his men have been under siege.

The Australian soldiers, supported by helicopters and armored vehicles, stormed the town of Same, 50km south of the capital Dili, at dawn.

Four armed East Timorese men were killed and two others injured during the operation, but their leader, Major Alfredo Reinado, escaped the troops.

The operation was authorised by East Timor’s president, Xanana Gusmão, after Reinado refused to negotiate.

The Major was directly involved in the clashes with the government forces last May, and was later jailed by Portuguese troops for having in his possession dozens of weapons and explosives that he hadn’t handed over to the Australian troops in charge of disarming the rebels. Reinado escaped during a mass breakout from a Dili jail last August.

After the Australian-led operation started, many conflicts occurred simultaneously in different parts of Dili, with roads being barricaded and cut off by burning tires, rocks and trees. Many houses and vehicles were also burned, as violence between rival groups started on the streets.

The Vila Verde neighborhood, right in the center of Dili, was one of the most affected, with facilities of the Education Ministry being engulfed by a fire until the morning.

Benjamin Marty, finance manager for the Norwegian Council for Refugees in East Timor, has his house and office in Vila Verde, in the same street that connects the Portuguese Corporation Neighborhood to the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) headquarters.

“I didn’t get too worried when a saw a group of people starting to hit the gate, but I called my boss, that said me to stay calm.” Bryn Bithell-Marty said.

“Ten minutes later, I see the GNR arrive and starting to fire rubber bullets to the right and to the left” of the street, Marty remembered.

“They called and asked me to open the gate, but initially I didn’t understood what they wanted, because I don’t speak Portuguese. Just in some minutes, I was inside a armored vehicle, and we got out of there at the same speed that they had arrived, deviating from the barricades with a lot of skill”, Marty added.

Benjamin Marty said he was “surprised with the professionalism” with which the Portuguese Republican National Guard (GNR) acted, but he was discontented with members of the United Nations Police (UNPol).

“There’s UNPol near my house, the patrol cars were always stopped and the police agents didn’t do anything», Marty said, adding that the UNPol agents also didn’t react “hours early when some people started to burn tires and hitting metal to call other people to the street”.

The clashes in Taibessi, Pité neighbourhood, and at the entrance of the UNMIT headquarters were the most severe, involving firearms in some locations.

In Banana Road, one of the main roads that crosses the city, a group of teenagers guarded a poster of Alfredo Reinado.

“We are the defenders of Major Alfredo, hero of the justice. We are ready to die to defend him”, said one of them.

In the streets of Taibessi since some days ago that the illumination posts and some trees have posters and banners of Alfredo Reinado.

As a response to the successive attacks by a group on the Pité neighborhood, 15 Portuguese Public Security Police (PSP) officers, organized themselves without orders from the UNPol, and for three hours the 15 officers faced the attacks.

Later back at the GNR headquarters, Benjamin Marty, found himself even more surprised. “Do you know how the Asterix and Obelix stories end?” he said. On the GNR headquarters there wasn’t a party with roasted boars, like in the Gaul village, “but there was a cow in the skewer”, he added.

All of the three GNR operational platoons then left their monthly festivity to the streets of Dili, for a operation that lasted seven hours.

After Hurricane Katrina passed across the United States, various artists and media stars have leapt at a call to action.

John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston flew his private plane to deliver a load of supplies and tetanus vaccine to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Part of a Scientology project which has been using their non-massage “assists”, in an interview Preston mentioned that “auditing” had also been performed on victims.

Kevin Smith is holding an online auction on his Web site.

Sean Penn actually went to Louisiana. After loading down a small boat with his entourage, it was discovered one of them had neglected to seal a hole in the bottom. Penn was wearing a white vest rather than a life vest while bailing. After the motor wouldn’t start, the crew paddled down a flooded New Orleans street. Bystanders jeered at whether any victims could fit aboard the crowded craft. No report on rescue stunts. Local authorities had previously been criticized for not allowing volunteer boaters in to help.

Morgan Freeman, whose home fared well, is organizing an online auction of celebrity items at charityfolks.com, to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Curt Schilling opened his home to a family of nine driven out of their New Orleans home. The Schilling family will provide housing for the Fields for a year while their home in New Orleans is rebuilt and repaired.
