Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

Accommodation For Visitors In And Around Coventry

Submitted by: Susan Ashby

Once the cathedral has been visited and unless you were visiting friends or there on business there is not a lot to persuade a visitor to stay for more than one night in Coventry. However, nearby to the city there is a wealth of tourist’s attractions all within about 30 kilometres that make Coventry an ideal place to stay in. Amongst the nearby attractions are; attending an exhibition or show at the NEC, shopping in the Birmingham Bull Ring, visiting the historic Warwick or Kenilworth castles, not to mention visiting the museums and theatres of Shakespeare’s Stratford-Upon-Avon.

One of the most exclusive and top quality hotels in Coventry is the Ramada Hotel in the seventeen storey Butts, which is located between the main railway station and the Civic Centre. A four star hotel that offers five star cuisine in Fillinis restaurant. It has three types of rooms: executive suites – a bedroom with en suite, studios – which also include a separate sitting area and suites – that are more suitable for long-stay guests, having even more space with dining and kitchenette facilities. The typical prices for an executive suite is around 135 a night on a weekday, but this can just about be halved for a week-end stay. To the north of the city centre on the Tamworth Road, which is just off the A4063 near junction 3 of the M6, is the four star Royal Court Hotel. Located in parkland it is a period residence and has 211 rooms furnished and decorated as a typical country manor house. Room rates can vary according to when and how you book. A typical weekday price is 110 a night for a double room with breakfast. However, by booking in advance over the internet or if you place a week-end booking, that price can be almost halved. The hotel also has a top class restaurant, bar, swimming pool, saunas, beauty salon and Jacuzzi.

Also set in parkland, 5 hectares this time, is the exclusive Nailcote Hall Hotel and Country Club. This is just outside the city on Nailcote Lane at Berkswell – which using the B4101 is roughly half way between the Coventry suburb of Tile Hill and Balsall Common in the county of Warwickshire. The hotel occupies a magnificent 17th century house and offers a variety of facilities and entertainments to cater for many different functions. It is a popular venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions, evening entertainment/cabaret and a host of sporting and other leisure activities. In 2007 it hosted the British Par 3 Golf Championship on its own 9 hole golf course. The hotel offers a choice of restaurants and bars, with a three course evening meal costing around 35 per person, excluding drinks. All the rooms are recently refurbished and are fitted out to a very high standard. Whilst they do have family rooms for up to four people at 300 a night and single rooms at 185 a night, a double room will cost anything between 200 and 350 a night – dependant on the type of room you book. All prices include VAT and full English breakfast.

All the familiar national chains of hotels can be found in and around Coventry. Britannia Hotels have one at Rye Hill in Allesley, which is on the north western edge of the city. Prices can vary according to how and when you book a room. A standard double room could be anything from 35 to 90 a night, excluding breakfast which is an extra 10. By booking in advance and over the internet you’re almost certain to get the lower price offered to you, making this a good three star hotel to stay in as it also has a restaurant for evening meals and, of course, its own bar. If you want a three star hotel with a more central location the Menzies Leofric is one you can consider. Located on Broadgate it is opposite the cathedral and about as central as you can get to the city centre. Given this very central location the price for a double room is more expensive at around 60 a night, for a basic room including breakfast if booked in advance and online.

With three star hotels like the prices given above the two star and budget hotels are starting to feel the squeeze. However, there are plenty of budget hotels to choose from in Coventry. For example the Ibis on Mile Lane, just outside the city centre to the south, offers rooms on week days from 56 a night excluding breakfast, or around 45 a night at week-ends. However, the Formule 1 hotel in Coventry, also on Mile Lane, has a weekday or week-end double room available at just 26 a night, excluding breakfast which can be obtained for just 2.50 extra.

If you’re having an extended stay in Coventry and prefer to have a self-service apartment the Kingsreal Serviced Apartments at Priory Place might be what you’re looking for. Located near to the cathedral, these recently built fully equipped two bedroom apartments are available at 630 – 840 a week and include a concierge and weekly maid service.

New industrial area to be created in Arad county, Romania

Wednesday, April 13, 2005The local government of Arad County in western Romania today launched a project calling for the creation of a new industrial area in the commune of Zimandul Nou. They have already allocated 0.3 km² for this project, with more land being expected to be allocated for the industrial precinct.

The president of Arad Couty Council, Iosif Matula, says that the labour force in the area is qualified in industrial occupations, especially in the fields of textiles, furniture, electronics and tools industries. The site also already has all the necessary infrastructure, such as gas, access to sewage and a water purifying facility.

The industrial area will be located on the outskirts of the Zimandul Nou commune, which is a fairly small, rural town. The proposed Zimandul Nou industrial area is one of the latest development projects by the Arad County Council, which has, since a few years ago, embarked on a fairly wide-ranging project of attracting foreign investment and developing further industry in rural areas.

The county capital, Arad, with a population of nearly 190,000, is one of Romania’s largest industrial centres and is a major centre for foreign investment, but the county council would like to see more industry heading to the rural areas. The Zimandul Nou precinct will be the eighth industrial zone in a formerly-rural area in the county. The other seven areas have already attracted combined foreign investments of over 120 million euro.

Porsche and Volkswagen automakers agree to merger

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Porsche and Volkswagen family owners agreed on Wednesday to merge the companies, creating one large “integrated car-manufacturing group”.

“In the final structure, 10 brands shall stand below an integrative leading company alongside each other, whereby the independence of all brands and explicitly also of Porsche shall be ensured,” said the Porsche Automobil Holding SE company.

A task force has been set into place to discuss details of the merger over the next month. This task force embraces managers and representatives from the works council of both companies as well as the state of Lower Saxony.

Porsche based in Stuttgart, Germany was previously controlled by the Porsche and Piëch families voting stock.

Porsche had previously tried to raise its 51% shares in Volkswagen to 75% in a take-over bid. A special German law grants Lower Saxony enough power to veto decisions with its 20% share in the VW company.

“I’m certain that we can and will advance our partnership in the difficult current year 2009, [and] have the stuff to develop the powerhouse of the international automobile industry” said Martin Winterkorn chairman of the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen AG) and Scania AB.

The merger would help Porsche with its €9 billion debt which it incurred partially due to the ailing economy as well as its attempt at a takeover bid.

New Zealand policewoman found moonlighting as prostitute

Thursday, July 20, 2006

An Auckland, New Zealand policewoman, who has not been named, has been working part-time as a prostitute. Her employer, Auckland City Police, did not know that she had been working as a prostitute for a limited time. She has been able to keep her police job.

Prostitution became legal in New Zealand in 2003.

The police officer was prostituting herself because of financial difficulties. A person working in the Christchurch sex industry said “It’s usually either for debts or drugs.”

She is now undergoing counselling.

The New Zealand Police would not comment on how long she had been acting as a prostitute.

Lyn Provost, Deputy Commissioner, said “the nature of the secondary employment was incompatible with policing and would never have been approved.”

The police say that if a police officer was to seek secondary employment then it must be signed off, this job hadn’t been. It would have been a conflict of interest.

Ron Mark, New Zealand First Party Law and Order spokesman, said “the case is concerning, because while prostitution is legal, it is associated with criminal activity.”

A representative of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective (NZPC) said there were law students and doctors who were sex workers.

“NZPC’s philosophy is that we support people that are in that secondary employment … we support them for their sexual health needs or any other needs – emotionally, physically, spiritually – that we can accommodate.” a representative of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective said.

Pet Medical Treatment In Alexandria, Va Can Relieve Your Pet’s Suffering From Allergies

byAlma Abell

Could your dog or cat have allergies? Pets don’t have the same allergic reactions that humans do, although they can be allergic to many of the same things. When a dog starts licking and chewing on his feet in the fall, it might be a ragweed allergy. In the spring, constant licking and rubbing might indicate a pollen allergy. A pet who spends most of their time in the house could develop an allergy to dust mites. Food allergies are quite common. As pets get older, the symptoms may worsen.

Allergy Symptoms

It’s fairly common for pet lovers to mistake their pet’s constant chewing or scratching for something else. If the allergy isn’t diagnosed, then treating only the symptom will not bring a permanent cure. Successfully managing a pet’s allergy can be frustrating.

Common allergy symptoms include:

1. Chewing and licking the feet, side or groin area;2. Face rubbing;3. Constant itching and possible hair loss;4. Chronic ear infections;5. Tiny facial scabs on cats or hot spots on dogs;6. Respiratory problems and wheezing, especially in cats.

Diagnosing Allergies

The veterinarian may be able to diagnose the probable

allergen after conducting a physical exam and taking a complete history. If not, the next pet medical treatment in Alexandria VA would be a skin test similar to the skin tests that are used to diagnose allergies in humans.

If a food allergy is suspected, the vet weeks, individual foods can be added one at a time until the one(s) causing the allergic symptoms has been identified. One indication of a possible food allergy would be skin infections that respond well to antibiotics, but then return when the treatment has ended.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the allergen. Removing it from the pet’s environment may be necessary. Weekly bathing with prescription shampoos can alleviate itching. Some dogs benefit from allergy injections or other pet medical treatment in Alexandria VA. An epi-pen may be prescribed if a pet has had a severe allergic reaction.

The Hayfield Animal Hospital offers preventive care, dental care, grooming, surgical procedures and diagnostics. Whatever your pet’s problem, including allergies, they understand how important your pet is to you. Visit their website at hayfieldanimalhospital.com to learn more.

Airborne sedan smashes into dental office in Santa Ana, California, US

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

A car accident involving the car occupants and a dentist’s office happened on Sunday night in Santa Ana, California. A white Nissan sedan which was apparently driving too fast hit the raised concrete median on the road, after which it was launched into the air, slamming straight into the wall of the second floor of a two-story dental practice building, where the car got wedged.

According to the police, the car approached from a side street. The room of the dental office penetrated by the sedan was used as a storage space. A fire department crane was used to extract the vehicle from the building, which took several hours.

There were two people in the sedan. One of them managed to escape from the hanging vehicle on his own, while the other one remained trapped inside it for over an hour. They were both hospitalized with minor injuries, according to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). According to the police, the driver of the car admitted narcotics use, and after toxicology tests the case is to be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The moment of the accident was captured by surveillance video from a bus which the car narrowly missed when becoming airborne.

According to OCFA spokesperson Captain Stephen Horner, there was a small fire after the crash, which was extinguished quickly.

Manitoba’s flood creating hazardous conditions

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

The Red River at Winnipeg is almost clear of ice blocks and ice jamming, however there are still dangers from the Red River flood.

Ice blocks which were as high as two storey buildings were ripping out trees, fences and railway ties. “You’ll see huge pans of ice standing vertical, up to 20 feet (6 m) high,” said Steve Topping, an official with the provincial Water Stewardship Department. “Ice was shoved up on the shore and took out trees with a very devastating effect. It has changed people’s view of the river.”

“It is incredible, the force. One piece of ice pushed out of the river about 20 feet. You watch the force push this up right in front of your eyes,” said Dean North, of the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police are ticketing sight seers who are driving through road closure signs and approaching excavators, cranes and crews breaking up the ice. Vehicles, people, boats, and kayaks are getting in the way.

An eight year old boy is in critical condition after slipping on a culvert Thursday. He was pulled underwater by the speed of the flowing water and remained under for about five to ten minutes until adults could rescue him. The air ambulance supplied by Alberta’s STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) remains in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“This is not a spectator sport. It’s not about getting the best pictures for the family albums. I know floods are seen as a bit of an event, but some of the instances I’m hearing about, people should give their head a shake, they really should,” said Steve Ashton Manitoba Emergency Measures Minister, “Those who fall into the river or get into trouble in another way would be not only endangering themselves but the emergency response crews trying to rescue them. I don’t want to see a situation … where we’re trying our darndest to prevent flooding and save lives and somebody [who] decides to go have a white-water experience ends up killing themselves.”

Early Easter Sunday morning floodwater reached the rural municipalities of St. Andrews and St. Clements north of Winnipeg. Residents were sent an evacuation advisory Good Friday, however some residents remained. Rescue efforts commenced Saturday night to find those stranded and unable to leave as their vehicles cannot travel in the swollen overland floodwaters. Some people were rescued from roof tops as entire houses were swept off of their foundations by the large ice blocks hurtling down the river.

Highways in the area remain closed. Neil Gobelle, of Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation said to “definitely continue to watch the Red River Valley and north of the city up in the Selkirk area. Things are changing quite a bit, quite quickly, so we’ll keep an eye on those areas.”

As of Easter Sunday, Winnipeg is expected to be ice free on the Red River. The River rose 4 feet (1 m) in the course of 24 hours. Rain is in the forecast and the higher temperatures of 17 °C (62.6 °F) will cause melting of snow and ice.

A weather system caused by La Niña is being watched by the United States National Weather Service and its potential effects between April 16-18 for residents along the Red River Valley. “We want people to be aware there is a very real possibility of the river going higher than what is out there,” said Mark Ewens, data manager at the NWS, “To have spring floods like this back-to-back is just an unfortunate series of events that have come along to plague us this spring. We’re wanting people to understand that this is a potentially serious problem.”
