Indian Ocean tsunami, one year after

Monday, December 26, 2005One year on from the Indian Ocean tsunami, the world’s grief and compassion returned to the tsunami-battered coastlines of the Indian Ocean, where at least 216 000 people lost their lives. Under a clear sky and before a gentle sea, the world commemorated those lost their lives, in one of the worst natural disasters that the modern world has experienced.

Since the Indian Ocean tsunami, patchy progress has been made on the return to a normal life for those who lived through the experience. Efforts to implement a warning system similar to that coordinated by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii have past a number of significant milestones. Tourist resorts in many places have been rebuilt, and many visiting them at this time do so as a form of remembrance. Yet still there remain those who may never recover from the tragic events of one year ago. Some $13 billion was pledged to relief and recovery efforts, of which 75 percent has already been secured.

Kitesurfers Took Off Hayling Beach For A World Record}

Submitted by: Kiteboarding Stuff

What is more beautiful to watch than a sky full of birds, clouds and lots of kitesurfers? Well, not just 2 kitesurfers, but hundreds of them, over 300 kitesurfers flying up in the sky and showing their mad skills in kiteboarding. It is a sight to savour the moment. A truly magnificent view to look at.

People reveled in the view as hundreds of kitesurfers fled the beach of Hayling and is on their way for a breaking world record of kitesurfers embracing the heat of the sun and just doing their best when it comes to kitesurfing.

We are talking about the 362 kitesurfers who are ready to take on the challenge on breaking the 352 number of kitesurfers in the Guinness World Record, while they are backed up by the Virgin Company tycoon Sir Richard Branson and the organisers of the said event. They are hoping to break the record and also it is for the largest parade of kitesurfers that will assemble in the seashore. It was fittingly called the Kitesurfing Armada. Its the most anticipated event of the season, especially for all kitesurfers who came all the way across the world to join this prestigious event. The kitesurfers will take to the water near Hayling Island Golf Club to complete the one-mile course for everyone.

But sport is full of surprises, especially with the weather involved. While everyone is having a blast of fun, it was around 3pm, Saturday, there are only 344 kitesurfers who had completed the one-mile course and eight of them shy out for the world record. But the loss failed to dampen spirits as people of all ages enjoyed the experience. For them, it was an experience of a lifetime. It will surely be put in their memory box, for sure. The oldest participant was Judy Tonkinson, 73, from West Sussex.

In her interview, she said here for the charities involved, thats what the Armada is all about. Having fun on the day and beating the youngsters is just an added bonus! Judy was the oldest kitesurfer in the event and Adam Farrington, an 11 years old boy, was the Kitesurfing Armadas youngest participant who has kited his way together with his father, Mr. Russell Farrington.

According to Mr. Russells interview, he said Its so much better now that Adam can kitesurf with me, he doesnt have to just watch or sit on my board. Its important to keep young people coming through the sport. Its important to show how good and how beneficial kitesurfing is all about. Each participant raised at least 100, with all of the proceeds going to charities, which were youth charity Snow-Camp, Virgin Unite and the RNLI.

We came across with Dan Charlish, the director of Snow-Camp and the Kitesurfing Armada event. In his interview, he mentioned that the event was a phenomenal event of the season and to see the response of the kitesurfing community, coming together as a kitesurfing family to support the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada, is quite overwhelming. Although we had enough kitesurfers on the water, because of disqualifications the official result was 344 but a fantastic result nonetheless, he then added.

For all the kitesurfers who joined the event, for them it was a brilliant day at Hayling and they were so grateful to have witnessed an awesome event. They surely wont forget this for the rest of their lives.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Hong Kong’s recession ends, economy grows 3.3%

Friday, August 14, 2009

According to official records, Hong Kong’s economy has left a year-long recession, recording a growth of 3.3% in the second quarter ended in June. The figures, which were seasonally adjusted, were higher than forecast by economists.

As a result, the government has increased its growth predictions for 2009. Previous estimates suggested the economy would contract by 5.5% to 6.5%. Now, the contraction is only predicted to be between 3.5% and 4.5%.

“The GDP data was much better than we expected, partly because the exports were better and partly because of a pick-up in private consumption,” Bank of East Asia’s chief economist, Paul Tang, noted. “Private consumption is being driven up by stock market gains and by the property sector, which started doing well.”

However, government economist Helen Chan warned that “while we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, […] the outlook remain highly uncertain because the situations in the United States and Europe are still very weak.”

What Services Does A Plumber Provide?

byAlma Abell

Residential and commercial plumbers provide installation and repair services for water, waste and other systems. An important plumbing service in Nassau County is emergency call-outs to find and repair leaks as well as unclogging drains and fixtures. Although many services are not done on an emergency basis, plumbers also install garbage disposals, maintain and repair water heaters and provide full service during a bathroom or kitchen renovation that includes new plumbing or the relocation of existing services. Many plumbers also clean tree roots from the sanitary drain leading to the main sewer as well as provide inspection services for existing systems.

There are times when all of a sudden the water consumption jumps considerably, this usually means that there is a leak somewhere in the pressure water piping. At times the homeowner may be able to locate the leak but at other times the plumber may have to spend several hours cutting into walls looking for the source of the problem.

It is easy for a drain to get clogged when you consider the amount of food particles, hair and other residue that goes down a typical drain. A major plumbing service in Nassau County is clearing clogged drains using snakes, a rooter or even hydro jetting.

A common tool in a plumber’s arsenal is a rooter machine. These machines consist of a long, flexible cable with blades attached which spin and clear the clog. Plumbers also use a snake which does a similar job however; there are snakes that carry a small camera with them into the drain to locate the source of the problem. Hydro jetting utilizes water under high pressure and is also used to clear clogs in drains and septic systems.

A major problem that many homeowners encounter is tree roots that grow into the sewer pipe. The roots can eventually block the drain completely and cause major problems. A plumber uses the camera to identify the problem area and then remove them using the rooter.

Plumbers are often called to a home which is being purchased or sold to conduct a survey of the plumbing system. The inspection covers a visual inspection of the pipes, checking to see that all faucets are operating properly and test the drains for flow.

Norwegian scientist published fake findings in Lancet

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

According to Norwegian and British newspaper sources, Jon Sudbø, a cancer researcher at the Norwegian Radium Hospital, fabricated at least 900 patient records in his research on NSAID drugs published in October of 2005 (PMID 16226613). According to the now-discredited research, the class of drugs, commonly used for pain management, was found to decrease the risk of oral cancer but increase the risk of heart disease.

This field of research is important for the future use of Cox-2 drugs and was received with great interest by the United States Food and Drug Administration and other organizations involved in drug safety and efficacy.

Several other scientists put their name to the article in the Lancet but claim they were misled by Sudbø. The Lancet is publishing a retraction in its upcoming edition. Probes are underway both to investigate how this article passed peer review, and whether previous research by Sudbø was fraudulent.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

Why Real Rattan Is Great For Rattan Garden Furniture

Why Real Rattan is Great for Rattan Garden Furniture

by

Travis Rivera

It is important to see how the rattan materials in rattan garden furniture are made when finding something beautiful to use in any garden. Good rattan garden furniture can be made with real materials in mind. This is used to create the best possible furniture in a garden.

The first reason why it helps to find real rattan is that it can be easier to prepare for any piece of rattan garden furniture. This kind of furniture is often prepared with a series of long materials. This comes from how rattan is noted for being a climbing palm that can grow to be exceptionally long. This should make it easy for anyone to handle without any issues.

It is also helpful to find real rattan because it can be durable. It is able to handle weights consistently and without issues. This is different from what some other rattan garden furniture pieces might feature. Some are simply painted to look like they are made with actual rattan materials when in reality they are not very durable like real rattan is.

Also, real rattan is known for being able to handle all kinds of weather issues. It will not be difficult to get this furniture to work with a design that is comfortable and easy to handle. This is a benefit in that a user will easily get one s furniture to not only look attractive but will also survive outdoor conditions that might cause other kinds of materials to wrap and become damaged.

In fact, rattan garden furniture can be prepared with real and untreated items in mind. The problem with some pieces of furniture is that they are prepared with artificial sprays that are used to help keep fungus materials off of them. This often makes the rattan more susceptible to fungus materials after the spray is handled. Fortunately, real rattan is known to be naturally resistant to these items and will be safe to use outdoors without any risks coming from the rattan being damaged by some kind of impact on it.

The final point is that it will look a little more natural in a garden if the rattan is real. This is needed to help keep a consistent look that is appealing and functional at the same time so anyone can get a great and attractive looking garden ready with great furniture accents.

These are great things that show why it is such a good idea to find rattan garden furniture that is real and safe to handle. Real rattan garden furniture can be made with not only authentic rattan materials but can also last for a while and will not be subjected to some of the damage issues that fake rattan materials can come with.
