“The Simpsons” announces change in title sequence and move to HD

Sunday, February 15, 2009

The American cartoon series “The Simpsons” will today be broadcast for the first time in high definition (HD). Today’s show will also introduce a new title sequence.

Today’s episode, named “Take My Life, Please” (20×10), also makes references to HDTV in the Chalkboard gag when Bart Simpson writes “HDTV is worth every cent” on the chalkboard.

This will be the first major permanent change to the show’s introduction since its launch in 1989; previous changes have included variations in the duration of the intro, and special one-shot introductions for the Treehouse of Horror Halloween episodes. This new intro also includes some 3D animation when the camera pans over Springfield.

This episode is not quite the first time The Simpsons has appeared in HD, as The Simpsons Movie was rendered in HD.

Fox will broadcast The Simpsons in 720p and will now letterbox the show on their standard definition feed.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Suspected serial killer appears in British court

Friday, May 28, 2010

A man accused of being a serial killer has appeared in Bradford magistrates court in West Yorkshire today charged with three counts of murder. 40-year-old Stephen Griffiths is accused of killing Suzanne Blamires, 36, Susan Rushworth, 43, and Shelley Armitage, 31, all prostitutes.

Griffiths, a former van driver with a degree in psychology and studying for a PhD in criminology, gave his name as “Crossbow Cannibal” when asked. He has been in police custody since Monday when police were alerted to a CCTV recording that appeared to show a murder.

A caretaker had been reviewing footage from the flats where Griffiths lives when he saw footage of a woman and a man enter a flat early on Saturday morning. Two minutes later, she ran out and was followed by the man, who beat her to the ground and shot her in the head with a crossbow. Over the course of the weekend, the man was seen several times with bin bags and a rucksack.

On Tuesday, the day after the arrest of Griffiths, Blamires’ remains were found in the River Aire in nearby Shipley. She had been cut into several pieces and her head was located in a rucksack. Police continue to search for the other two alleged victims; Rushworth has been missing since June last year and Armitage vanished in April.

Police have searched much of Bradford’s red-light district, where Griffiths’ third-floor flat is located. Forensic investigations at the flat are expected to last around three weeks. There are plans to search landfill sites for bodies, and police may yet expand the inquiry to cover three more cold cases, although at present they have not been linked to the current inquiry.

Sniffer dogs have been used throughout the city, and police have been taking away plastic evidence bags. Some alleyways remain closed off. Police charged their suspect yesterday.

Griffiths was known as “the lizard man” in his block of flats owing to his habit of walking his two pet monitor lizards in the area. One neighbour is reported to have quoted him as saying he was studying for “a PhD in murder and Jack the Ripper,” and he has spent time in a high-security psychiatric hospital. During his five-minute court appearance he did not enter a plea, kept his head bowed and fidgeted with his cuffed hands. He said “Here, I guess,” when asked for his address.

As he stood in the glass-fronted dock, guarded by three security officers, he was watched by the families of Rushworth and Armitage, who were accompanied by police family liaison officers. Blamires’ family chose not to be present, but the victim’s mother Nicky Blamires, 54, has told the press that Suzanne was a “much-loved” family member even though she “went down the wrong path and did not have the life she was meant to have.” “Nobody deserves this,” she said. “All these girls were human beings and people’s daughters.”

Griffiths’ morning court appearance was followed by a second one this afternoon, at Bradford Crown Court. This time, he confirmed his name without incident. He was remanded into custody until next month, when he will appear in court again.

British media has been quick to compare the case to Peter Sutcliffe, dubbed the “Yorkshire Ripper”. Sutcliffe was a Bradford killer responsible for thirteen murders and seven attempted murders, including several prostitutes. Since his 1981 conviction he has spent most of the last three decades in Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital near London.

Handling Industrial Materials Made Easier With Counter Balance Truck

Handling Industrial Materials Made Easier With Counter Balance Truck

by

I. Gates

The forklift counter balance truck is widely used to handle industrial materials in factories or warehouses around the globe. Top manufacturers like Toyota, Mitsubishi and Linde all manufacture these types of trucks. In these, you also get to use the choice of fuel (diesel, gas or electric) to suit your needs and requirements. Some of the common features and components of these types of trucks are as follows.

Each of this counter balance truck has a truck frame. This is present at the base of the machine to which other parts like mast, axels, wheels, counterweight and power source are attached. The frame may have fuel and hydraulic fluid tanks constructed as part of the truck frame assembly. The ‘counterweight’ which is attached to the counter balance truck frame is a heavy cast iron mass. The big lead-acid battery itself may serve as a part of the counterweight in an electric forklift. In this counter balance truck, the area that contains a seat for the operator along with steering wheel, control pedals, levers, switches and a dashboard containing operator readouts is called the ‘cab.’ The ‘mast’ is the vertical assembly that does the work of raising and lowering the load. The power source of this truck can be powered by LP gas, CNG gas, gasoline or diesel fuel. The electric forklifts of this type are powered by either a battery or fuel cells that provide power to electric motors. Along with these, the counter balance truck

has a variety of attachments which are available to handle materials. These include side shifters, slip sheet attachments, carton or multipurpose clamps, rotators, etc. Similarly, mobile cranes are also used to lift heavy weights. These types of cranes have the same lifting gear as static ones. The only difference is that these cranes come on wheels and do not need assembling when compared with the static cranes.

These mobile cranes can be driven to the site directly where lifting is required. They can be jacked up, unfolded and put immediately to work. It takes less than an hour to position and set up these types of cranes than setting up a tower crane which then has to be checked for safety purposes. Once these mobile cranes are built, it simply needs regular maintenance to ensure that it is still working properly. Since these types of cranes are hired and arrive already assembled, checking can be done by the hire company than the company who is hiring the machine. The modern type of these mobile cranes is super flexible that even the big ones can get into very small places. These cranes are usually built on a multi axel plan, which allows even a long vehicle to make uncommonly tight turns. This means that these cranes can get down into streets and alleys where no other cranes can go. The best multi axel of these mobile cranes

can make a 90 degree turn into a narrow street with no difficulty. This is mostly used by county councils as these types of cranes allow only that street to be shut down where work is being done.

Royal Canadian Mint unveils world’s largest gold coin

Friday, May 4, 2007

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) introduced two new products Thursday, one of which is claimed to be the world’s largest gold coin. The Gold Maple Leaf coin, made of 99.999% pure gold, weighs 100 kg and has a face value of CA$1 million. The other offering is a smaller one ounce (28 g) version.

The 100 kg coin is approximately 50 cm in diameter and about 3 cm thick. At 99.999% purity, the gold coins are amongst the purest in the bullion market.

Commenting on its impractical size, RCM President and CEO Ian E. Bennett indicated that the 100 kg coin was designed to draw attention to the mint. “The Royal Canadian Mint operates in a very competitive environment, which is especially true of the international gold bullion market,” said Bennett. “Our 100-kg and one ounce 99.999% pure gold bullion coins are an achievement which separates the RCM from a large field of competitors.”

Until RCM’s announcement on Thursday, the Austrian Mint held the record for the world’s largest gold coin when, in 2004, it unveiled a €100,000 denomination coin weighing 31 kg.

In the RCM news release, Canada’s government minister responsible for the Royal Canadian Mint, Lawrence Cannon, highlighted RCM’s history of producing minted products. “The Royal Canadian Mint has long been recognized as one of the most innovative in the world, with a tradition of technical perfection and superior craftsmanship,” said Cannon. “These new…coins now take Canada’s reputation in the gold bullion industry to an unprecedented level.”

The reverse, or tail side of the new Canadian coin features a maple leaf design, while the obverse, or head side bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Although the 100 kg coin has a face value of $1 million, it would cost approximately CA$2.6 million (or US$2.4 million) to purchase, based on the market value of gold. A limited quantity of the 100 kg coins will be available as a special order through the RCM.
