The White Stripes to tour ‘Great White North’

Saturday, April 28, 2007

Grammy Award-winning rock band The White Stripes announced on Wednesday the Canadian leg of a tour in support of their soon-to-be-released album, Icky Thump. The tour, which would be the first cross-Canada excursion for The White Stripes, will see the band play dates in all provinces and territories.

The latest tour for The White Stripes will kick off June 1 in Nürburgring, Germany and will play several dates in Europe before starting off in Canada on June 24, in Burnaby, British Columbia. Canadian dates will include stops in northern locales such as Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Iqaluit, on Baffin Island.

The White Stripes, made up of guitarist/singer Jack White and drummer Meg White, have developed a significant worldwide following with their blend of punk and blues, guitar-oriented rock. The band had expressed interest in playing cities they had not yet visited. “Having never done a full tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog,” said Jack White on The White Stripes website. “We want to take this tour to the far reaches of the Canadian landscape. From the ocean to the permafrost.” The band’s website referred to Canada by its nickname, the ‘Great White North’.

The White Stripes have played to thousands in large outdoor festival settings, but will have to deal with different logistics while setting up in a northern location, such as Iqaluit.

Some 500 tickets for the Iqaluit show are to be sold, with an admission fee of approximately CA$40. Mike Bozzer, the city of Iqaluit’s economic development officer, told CBC News that talks have taken place with The White Stripes’ publicist regarding equipment, technicians, security and other such details. “It’s definitely going to have some economic impact, and they’ll come back home with positive stories of the city,” said Bozzer.

The band’s ten-year anniversary will be reached at a point during the Canadian leg of the tour, which will be commemorated. “Another special moment of this tour is the show which will occur in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 14th, The White Stripes’ Tenth Anniversary,” said Jack White.

Following the Canadian dates, The White Stripes will embark on a tour in the United States, which will reach some 16 states they have not yet visited during their career, among other repeat locations.

Startup web broadcaster Joost signs deal with Warner Brothers

Friday, May 11, 2007

Internet TV came one step closer to reality as startup web broadcaster Joost recently announced that it signed a deal with Warner Brothers to host some of its WBTV-branded content. This deal, along with content deals with other television providers, lately Time Warner and Sony Pictures Television, makes Joost (pronounced “juiced”) the sweetheart aggregator and provider in the coming on-demand, freely distributed online TV broadcasts.

Joost bills itself as an online community where viewers, “can watch what you want, when you want, in full-screen eye-quality proper TV.” The service currently provides about 150 channels, although the availability of some channels varies by country or region due to copyright restrictions. Viewers can navigate screen menus to make programming choices, and then use “widgets” from drop-down menus that allow users to interact with the programming.

“Widgets include a clock, integration of instant messaging, RSS/News feeds and a chat room for the particular channel being viewed on the screen. Users have the ability to opt out of the widgets during viewing or can easily access them from the mouse-activated menus,” according to John P. Gamboa of the Dailey Aztec.

The development efforts at Joost are backed by technology-savvy web entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. The two used Internet peer-to-peer networking to create Kazaa, and then later Skype. The cutting-edge music file sharing and telephony implementations of these two applications, some say bleeding edge, appear to have had an affect on the approach being used now by the two at Joost along with co-developers. The copyright infringement-plagued Kazaa was sold to Sharman Networks in 2002. Skype was sold to eBay in October 2005 for $2.6 billion. In July last year, Kazaa settled with music record labels by making a $100 million payment as reparations for illegal file sharing activities employed by users of the application that enabled the distribution of copyright-infringed music files.

People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience…

Kazaa became a copyright bust. Skype became a jaw-dropping hit, and a hit in the jaw of telcom carriers whose management of voice transmission became undermined by the sub-set of Internet users with broadband connectivity and peer-to-peer web awareness. The evolution is distinctively one-way. Online broadband peer-to-peer connectivity is here to stay after a nasty birth.

“People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience, while the entertainment industry needs to retain control over their content,” said Joost chief executive officer Fredrik de Wahl. “We’ve married that consumer desire with the industry’s interests.”

The “marriage” of TV content to “consumer desire” is the hot-spot that media conglomerates are still seemingly trying to figure out as they dispense their less valuable content for Internet consumption. Joost has managed to secure some rights to webcast programming, but the content is not the highest quality broadcasted TV programming currently available through established subscription cable and satellite distribution channels, or even free airwave TV.

Underlying the concept of Internet TV is the distribution of content in a way that is more efficient than the existing model. Peer-to-peer networking over the Internet makes programming available when a user asks for it. The ‘on-demand’ feature of this approach frees up space in the distribution pipeline and provides feedback to the aggregator to know exactly what is in demand. It gives a middle-man the leverage to negotiate with media conglomerates and then manage a pipeline flooded with unviewed content, thereby conserving bandwidth. It also lets viewers opt for free online TV programming through content arrangements made by the web broadcaster, who acts as a gateway to the programs. However, it is not an advertising-free service.

The Joost hoopla is partly spurred on by its expansionist decision on May 1 to allow users of the Beta version to distribute 99 invitations to other people who could become Beta users.

Phone Spy Technology: The Reality Shall Set You Absolutely Free In Fact

Submitted by: Brockwg Cohen

By getting the info you want from the cell phone and acquiring it ideal in front of you on a screen, you’ll know what is really heading on and what isn’t.

Cell cellphone spy technologies performs by amassing information and facts about how a cell cell phone is utilized and posting it on a site. When you spend for an account in a cell cellphone spy software developer, you can see this information.

The type of information and facts you get is very effective to catch cheating spouses (or show them innocent, no matter what the scenario may possibly be). For illustration, you’ll be able to see any number that has termed your partner or that your partner has termed. You will also be in a position to see at what occasions the calls occurred. In addition, you’ll have accessibility to the subject material of any text message that was sent or obtained by the phone, even after it has been erased from the phone’s memory. And eventually, you can also come across the site of the cellphone, and by extension the site of the particular person keeping it, on a nearby on the net map.

This is the kind of data that folks commonly spend a non-public investigator for, only that cell cellphone spy software package is very much more cost-effective. Hundreds of dollars more affordable. Even though a non-public investigator will cost you through 200 dollars an hour, the plan is only about 140 (or a lot less). It’s no wonder that cell cellular phone spy technological innovation is so preferred these days.

Mobile phones spy technologies is the latest in sensible phones programs. It arrived out this yr and even though it’s nonetheless not really acknowledged, it’s speedily gaining consumers.

Of program, like any technological innovation, it has a price tag. Getting marketed at $50 to $60 dollars, dependent on the seller, it undoubtedly isn’t a little something you want to expend your funds in if you are not preparation to use it extensively.

The program is currently being marketed at 3 principal groups. Folks who imagine their spouses are cheating on them, parents who want to survey their kids, and employers who want to hold an eye on their employees. I can absolutely see how helpful cellular phones spy technological know-how be for these groups. I can even consider up of a few of added apps. For illustration, to maintain an eye on your outdated parents with out having to continually be on their backs. Also, if I have been a non-public detective, it’d make my job so much simpler. On the other hand, if you don’t fall inside any of these groups, the price of mobile phones spy engineering would be incredibly constrained. You could prank or scare a few of individuals, but the novelty would wear off extremely soon, and you most likely wouldn’t want to spend $sixty dollars on a prank.

The interface is really simple to use, which is beneficial news for people who aren’t extremely great with technology. I, even so, I’m not surprised as the operation of the software is really straightforward. In a way, it’s like adding a challenging drive to the Xbox console, in the sense that the guys who did it just took some technological innovation that was currently obtainable and combined it in a new and clever way that helps make everybody’s existence much easier.

Waddling Through Day Trading And Futures

Waddling Through Day Trading And Futures

by

FCFutures

Before we proceed, let us first clarify that day trading means the regular session during the day where most investment trades are conducted. Day trading usually ends at four PM, after which it is called the after-hours trading. Now, on to the discussion on futures.

The common denominator why people choose to invest in futures is the lure of money. However, day-trading futures is not a fool-proof business. There are risks involved and it would be wise to first find out what you\’re ready to face before you get into it. Statistics show that more and more people are becoming interested in investing into futures trading accounts because of the strong likelihood of collecting robust gains. One of the common mistakes in day futures trading is overshooting. When you make a financial plan, stick to it until the end and don\’t keep changing along the way. This will only cause confusion and result in you losing a lot more money in the end. Here are some tips traders should keep in mind every time they engage in day futures trading. The market is highly unpredictable and volatile. Just because you\’re trading futures and have some form of control over the outcome of your transaction, you can never be fully sure that you\’ll be banking a win. A lot of experts will give out forecasts about where the futures market is going, but none are extremely accurate. Trading is basically a gamble, so it\’s best not to put all your eggs in one basket. To be successful in day futures trading, you must first determine what your key goal is. Are you trading to generate profits, or are you doing it because it\’s exciting? Also, you must have a realistic aim, one that you can truly work with based on the resources you have. You must determine how much you\’re prepared to risk All traders seek to prevent huge losses on their futures accounts and not even the most seasoned of traders are spared when the tides turn against them. However, what separates professionals from the novices is that the former have greater emotional control when the heat turns up. It is inevitable that markets fall, because that\’s their nature. If you think you can\’t handle too much risk, then don\’t invest too grandly. Put out only what you can comfortably work with. What futures trading can guarantee is that at some point you win a lot and at some point you will lose. Thus, traders are expected to exercise an ample degree of patience and prudence when they make their financial decisions. That is, hope for the best and expect the worst. If you\’re not prepared to face a major downfall, then maybe futures trading is not for you. Remember, the market is unpredictable and no matter how much of an expert you say you are at it, there is no 100% fool-proof strategy to ensuring a win.

The risk of loss in trading futures contracts or commodity options can be substantial, and therefore investors should understand the risks involved in taking leveraged positions and must assume responsibility for the risks associated with such investments and for their results.

Two die in two-car crash near Connel, Scotland

Friday, August 2, 2013

A man and a woman have been killed in a road traffic accident near Connel in the west of Scotland. Seven people, including three children, were also injured in the head-on collision on the A85 road in Argyll at approximately 1830 BST (1730 UTC) yesterday.

A 74-year-old female passenger of a blue Honda CRV and a 32-year-old male passenger of a blue Vauxhall Vectra died at the scene of the crash. The Vauxhall driver, a 32-year-old woman, was transported by helicopter to Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital, where she is reportedly in a critical albeit stable condition.

Three child passengers in the Vauxhall, aged fourteen, five and two, were taken to Oban Hospital and given treatment for minor injuries, as were the Honda’s 51-year-old female driver and two female passengers aged 49 and 46.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said hydraulic cutting equipment was used during rescue efforts. “Ambulance personnel and police officers worked closely with our team throughout the incident but sadly one passenger from each car lost their life”, the spokesperson continued. “The thoughts of all emergency responders who were at the scene will be with the casualties and their loved ones as they attempt to come to terms with what has happened.”

Police have appealed for potential witnesses to contact them.

CyanogenMod: Open-source smartphone OS goes commercial

Thursday, September 19, 2013

File:CyanogenMod Cid.svg

The developers of CyanogenMod, an open source free Android-based operating system for smartphones, announced yesterday their incorporation following a successful venture capital campaign which netted the open-source project a US$7 million nest egg, and plan to roll out a simple installation app on Google Play for their Android firmware.

Android runs nearly 80% of new mobile devices; CyanogenMod operates on at least 7 or 8 million of those. CyanogenMod replaces the read-only-memory image in android devices which have been ‘rooted’ —control acquired of the device’s superuser account— allowing continuing development for, and backporting abilities of new generations of the operating system to, older devices.

Investor Mitch Lasky wrote on his blog “We believe that CM is poised to become one of the largest mobile operating systems in the world.” Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures are part of the capital providers to form Cyanogen Inc.

“The only limitation we have right now is with the number of engineers and designers we currently have. As we hire more people and build this company, we’ll be able to work on so many cool things”, said Koushik ‘koush’ Dutta, who took questions alongside Steve ‘cyanogen’ Kondik and team social media manager Abhisek “ciwrl” Devkota in a Reddit Ask Me Anything event shortly after making the announcement on the CyanogenMod blog. The team of 17, including Boost co-founder Kirt McMaster as CEO, are in Palo Alto, California and Seattle.

Kondik says Cyanogen mod is named after him. “I’m terrible with names, so I just slapped ‘mod’ onto the end of my handle and ran with it”, he explained in the incorporation announcement.

An early question raised in the Reddit event concerned profit-making: “Monetization isn’t an immediate concern and our investors […] feel the same”, said Dutta, adding “Creating disruption in a multibilion dollar market is enough to make any investor raise their eyebrow.” This means CyanogenMod would continue to be free. Follow questions asked if the company was planning to release their own model of android device. “We certainly couldn’t take on the monumental task of building/testing hardware . Hardware would be one of many potential very long term paths we could take”, said Dutta.

The firm’s first announced step is to improve the process of installing the software on owner’s devices, which Kondik described as “hideous”. A new installer app is planned to be released “in the coming weeks” on Google Play. The installer app will not require rooting the device, instead installing by simply clicking a button.

A further step, broadly described without any details, is a project with an unnamed original equipment manufacturer (OEM). “We have a least one OEM partnership in the works, there will be an announcement next week regarding our plans there”, said Kondik. The team mentioned OEM licensing several times during the Q&A session on Reddit.

In addition to these corporate steps, there were questions regarding the roadmap for development of the ROM, which already has improvements regarding privacy and security over the native android loader. With “plenty of things in the product pipeline already” Dutta lists additional security features, AirPlay mirroring, screen recording, and Voice+ as upcoming. The mood throughout the event was jovial, with humourous questions such as “can you guys PLEASE release a CM build for my toaster? I’m not sure what model it is, but it’s white and I got it at Savers.” Kondik promised “Ship it to me and I’ll duct tape a G1 running CM to it”. Dutta said his “10 of your favorite lines of source code” are “The ones that worked when they shouldn’t have.”

Internet Tendering}

Submitted by: James Mishreki

In reality, we still haven’t been able to shake off the effects of the dreaded recession. One fantastic business opportunity is tendering, all you need to do is easily researche the huge range of tenders that are made available regularly in the OJEU.

If you do your tendering the old fashioned way it can take ages, you have to hunt through the beefy OJEU to find what you are looking for, and for all you know there may be nothing that suits your business at all in that issue.

What’s more, if you find a tender you wish to register for, the ensuing tendering process is slow. You have to send off your Pre Qualification Questionnaire and wait for a response. In fact, you will have to have it sent out to you if you don’t have it first of all! Tendering on the internet cuts a lot of corners, the primary one being the search ability. You can really narrow down your search to exactly what is relevant to your company, meaning you don’t have to waste any time hunting through tenders that you would never actually be applying for. You can search by keyword, using CPV codes, or even by location. I’m sure you can already see why online tendering is so much more beneficial, but there are a lot more added benefits in addition to this!

The whole tendering process, once you have found a tender you wish to register for, is made quick and easy on the internet. You can simply submit the form right away, and then just wait to hear back. No more endless communication via post or telephone.

Also, if you still feel researching tenders takes up a bit too much of your time, you can register for a paid tender alert service which will send you email alerts whenever a tender crops up that falls under the specifications you outline when you set your account up. This means you don’t even have to go online and search, you just wait for the tenders to be sent out to you, and if you like to the look of one, you go ahead and start the tendering process.

Tendering on the web is a viable means of finding contracts that you otherwise would not have a clue about. It can sometimes be hard to fork out extra cash for something which you’ve managed up until now without, such as a tenders alert service, but at only 95 per year you can’t really go too wrong. Read some reviews online about what people think of such services, you should find that they report that the process of tendering is not only made much more efficient from subscribing to a service like that, but more efficient. Worst comes to worst, you lose out on 95. But think about the potential money it could bring in if you are alerted to tenders which are perfect for your business.

Good luck if you are trying online tendering for the first time. Whilst it can certainly be daunting to begin with, once you’ve done it once and gotten into a routine, you will wonder how you managed without it.

NSW Premier Iemma quits, replaced by Rees

Saturday, September 6, 2008

New South Wales Premier, Morris Iemma quit politics on Friday after a disagreement with the governing Australian Labor Party’s dominant “Centre Unity” faction about his proposed cabinet reshuffle. The reshuffle was prompted by the resignation of Deputy Premier John Watkins and the sackings of Treasurer Michael Costa and Health Minister Reba Meagher.

The political fallout follows the botched attempt to privatise the state’s electricity industry.

The right of the Labor party was presented with a list of colleagues who the Premier wanted in and out of his reshuffled cabinet. MPs were frustrated that Joe Tripodi was not on the our list. MPs rejected Iemma’s list and demanded the chance to vote upon it. Mr Iemma then told the faction that unless they accepted his cabinet he would resign. Caucus called Iemma’s bluff and said Iemma had lost support of the party.

The party then looked to the left-wing faction of the party and Nathan Rees was appointed unanimously and unopposed, Carmel Tebbutt was appointed as the state’s deputy premier.

It is the first time in 117 years that a Premier has lost support of his own party and the first time in NSW Labor history that the party has been led by a member from the left.

Speaking to the media, Mr Iemma said he could not lead a cabinet that was not of his own choosing.

“I took what I believed to be a package of renewal, reform and refreshment, for the party, the Cabinet. That was not accepted, so I tendered my resignation.

“I wasn’t going to serve as the head of a Cabinet that was being foisted on me and I wanted change and that was not going to be possible, so I tendered my resignation.”

Following his appointment, Nathan Rees told reporters that he had been elected as Premier of NSW. “Morris Iemma resigned as premier today, I nominated for the vacancy and I was elected unanimously by the full Labor caucus,” Rees said.

“We start work today for the people of New South Wales, we start work this afternoon to deliver services to the people of New South Wales”.

Rees and Tebbutt were sworn in by Governor Marie Bashir on Friday afternoon.

Shootings in Cleveland high school leave five injured, gunman dead

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

A 14-year-old student opened fire in a Cleveland, Ohio high school today, wounding four people. The gunman then fatally shot himself.

Police were called to the scene at 1:15 p.m. EST, with reports of a gunman in the school. The gunman, 14-year-old Asa H. Coon, entered the school with a gun in each hand. Students were evacuated, with the gunman reportedly still in the building for some time afterward.

According to Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson, two adult males, ages 57 and 42, and two teenage males, ages 18 and 14, were wounded, and taken to local hospitals. A third teenager, a 14-year-old female, hurt her knee while running from the school.

A spokesperson for the hospital would not give details of the students’ names or conditions, but Jackson said in an afternoon press conference that all three teenagers were in stable condition.

According to one student, 14-year-old student Michael Peek was the first person shot, after reportedly punching Coon in the face. The student indicated that Peek did not know that Coon was armed at the time. 18-year-old student Darnell Rodgers told the media that he was the other student shot, a graze wound for which he was treated and subsequently released.

The 57-year-old teacher, David Kachadourian, was listed in good condition. 42-year-old teacher Michael Grassie was in surgery and his condition was unavailable.

The gunman was reportedly upset about a recent suspension arising from a fight that happened Monday near the school.

According to one student interviewed by CNN, the gunman said he “worshiped the devil” and had mentioned committing a shooting at the school. Another student noted that the gunman often wore a trench coat and an empty pistol belt to class.

A security guard was present on the first floor of the building, but the position of a guard on the third floor was eliminated. While metal detectors were present in the building, they were not always in use; it is unclear whether they were in use at the time of the shooting.

The school, SuccessTech Academy, is a non-traditional school within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, described on their web site as a “small, nontraditional high school that provides a learning environment in which all student believe in their ability to succeed.” It opened five years ago.

SuccessTech is located on the third, fourth and fifth floors of a building in downtown Cleveland that also houses some administrative offices.

The school owes its existence in part to a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which helped to fund the creation of the school.
